EM Matthews's curator insight, June 20, 2015 6:01 AM

EQ is easily one of the most necessary, yet under-sought character skill sets for effective leadership and management! EQ was once the result of years of trial and error regarding effective social interactions. As the article suggests we all have the capacity for EQ, the challenge rests, however in actively nurturing (through targeted practice) our efforts at successfully employing and improving our EQ abilities, or characteristics.

[Benefits] 7 Important Reasons Why Practicing Empathy Makes You a Better Person ... | Recortes Atuais | Scoop.it

Did you know that practicing empathy can make you a better person? Empathy is actually one of the most important relational skills you can practice.

Merriam Webster defines empathy as “the action of understanding, being aware of, being sensitive to, and vicariously experiencing the feelings, thoughts, and experience of another of either the past or present without having the feelings, thoughts, and experience fully communicated in an objectively explicit manner.”...

========================

Here are a few very important reasons
why practicing empathy makes you
a better person:

========

1. YOU WILL BETTER UNDERSTAND THE PEOPLE AROUND YOU...
2. YOU WILL TREAT YOUR LOVED ONES THE WAY THEY WISH YOU WOULD TREAT THEM...
3. YOU WILL UNDERSTAND WHAT PEOPLE DON’T TELL YOU...
4. YOU WILL FIND IT EASIER TO DEAL WITH THE NEGATIVITY OF OTHERS...
5. YOU WILL BETTER UNDERSTAND THE PEOPLE YOU ARE DEALING WITH AT WORK...
6. YOU WILL BE ABLE TO PREDICT OTHER PEOPLE’S ACTIONS AND REACTIONS...
7. YOU WILL LEARN HOW TO MOTIVATE THE PEOPLE AROUND YOU...

Learn your crap detection skills now | Recortes Atuais | Scoop.it

“Every man should have a built-in automatic crap detector operating inside him.” — Ernest Hemingway

I was a teenager when I first came across that quote from Hemingway. He was speaking about the most valuable quality that a fiction writer should possess. Crap detection kept writers honest, according  to Hemingway, and fiction writers needed to be honest. Their job was to “invent out of knowledge.” This can mean writing about what you know, about personal experience. Better yet, it should mean constantly educating yourself, so that your fictional worlds ring true, with or without personal experience.

Overcoming the Fear of Being Wrong: 20 Ways To Help Your Students - InformED | Recortes Atuais | Scoop.it

Like cheating on a test, ignoring a friend’s phone call, wallowing in self-pity, or eating a pint of ice cream in one sitting, being wrong feels the worst when someone else is around to witness it. Unlike these things, being wrong is unjustly stigmatized as unacceptable. Everyone answers a question incorrectly now and then, but it’s the shame associated with being wrong, especially in front of others, that harms us more than the fault itself.

Tips for Dealing With A Bully, a Guide Released Today by NoBullying

Tips for Dealing With A Bully, a Guide Released Today by NoBullying | Recortes Atuais | Scoop.it

Tips for Dealing with a Bully are essential for mental health professionals and counsellors who directly deal with teenagers who bully. Today, NoBullying releases a guide on Tips for Dealing with a Bully.

One of the tips mentioned in the guide is to simply hold the young person who bullies fully accountable for his or her actions. Also, once the young person is able to recognize problems with his or her behavior, mental health professionals can help them set and work toward goals for change.

========================

Another tip is to build genuine empathy,

to help young people understand and

experience the impact of their behavior.

=======

And, according to the guide,the first steps in conscience development may involve young people learning that their own actions can cause them to get in trouble. After reaching that realization, they can begin to appreciate the impact of their actions on others.
