Meet the Doctor Big Pharma Can't Shut Up

Meet the Doctor Big Pharma Can't Shut Up | Complimentary & Integrative Medicine | Scoop.it
The pharmaceutical industry has compromised the Western medical establishment and hooked America on drugs. One psychiatrist is fighting back.
Kate Drake's insight:

Very interesting article and it gives you a lot not only to think about but also research into. Pills are not healthcare, although the American healcare system currently thinks that this is how it should be done.

7 Keys to a balanced vegan diet in line with Chinese medicine philosophy - Deepest Health

7 Keys to a balanced vegan diet in line with Chinese medicine philosophy - Deepest Health | Complimentary & Integrative Medicine | Scoop.it
Kate Drake's insight:

Thank you so much Eric for your article on veganism and the OM diet. And thank for keeping an opening discussion going so many people from the OM, ND and their patients of the community can chime in with their comments and experiences.

I would love to see the next generation of practitioners step up and say that vegetarian/vegan diets need to be addressed and taught in our institutions of OM and ND medicine.

I am not saying that we should be advocating that all OM/ND students or their future patients should become vegan. I do believe this topic needs to be addressed on a formal level and should be taught in the classrooms. We need more sensitivity in this area and more education so that practitioners can guide their vegan patients in keeping a healthy body while honoring their choice.

I live in Portland, OR and would be very interested in being kept abreast on any seminars or classes that discusses or teaches OM students or practitioners ways in which to bridge this gap both in food and with herbs.

Kate Drake's insight:

We can overcome the rate of obesity in America by taking several small steps. One of thse steps: City planners, politicians, health professionals, and communities should all be making stirdes to demand that more farmer's markets be present in their neighborhood. People will eat better if they have a relationship with their food. Having a positive relationship with your food can begin by knowing who grows it - your local farmer!

Uncertainty Is Hard for Doctors

Uncertainty Is Hard for Doctors | Complimentary & Integrative Medicine | Scoop.it
As a group, doctors dislike ambiguity. We pride ourselves in the scientific girders of modern medicine and are most comfortable when we are dispensing medical care to our patients that comes from a double-blind clinical trial, that fits into a...
Kate Drake's insight:

Yes, thankyou Dr. Ofri for mentioning that it is important to consider the whole patient, not just one part of the body. It is true, medical professionals are just that, professionals, but not god. Nor should they be looked at as such. Doctors do their best with what they know to be true. I will say this: We are not robots, or cars, nor should we be treated as such when we go in to see our health care providor. I will also say that if I were Dr. Ofri, I would have elected to give my patient more options than just 'the pros and cons' of surgery. I would have suggested that he seek a consultation with a complimentary medicine professional and seek alternative treatments that could have provided still a long term benifit and less risk. And during his recovery were CAM options even addressed to bring him back to normal? I would be interested in hearing your feedback Dr. Ofri.
