Consumers are increasingly aware just how much personal data they’re sharing with marketers. Whether browsing online or shopping in a store with a loyalty card, consumers reveal a lot of themselves every time they interact with a brand.


In a recent Communispace study (PDF), 86% of consumers would click a “Do Not Track” button if one existed and 30% would pay a 5% premium for a guarantee that their personal data would not be captured.


Yet 52% of consumers would share their personal data with marketers for discounts, with younger consumers more comfortable sharing personal data. A majority of Millennials and Gen X-ers would share data for discounts, while a majority of Boomers and Silents would not....

"Since Maryland passed the first ban two years ago after a state employee complained of having to reveal the password to his Facebook account, legislatures in states as politically different as Michigan and California, New Jersey and Utah, have passed laws that impose restrictions on snooping by government and private employers.


Louisiana, Oklahoma, Tennessee and Wisconsin approved laws this year, while Maine lawmakers voted to study restrictions. Similar legislation was introduced this year or is pending in more than 20 other states, the National Conference of State Legislatures said."

Not only are today's healthcare consumers and patients relying more on the Internet to seek out information, locate needed medical experts and keep up on latest research and treatments, they're also sharing what they learn through an increasing number of social media outlets, including Facebook and Twitter.

Social media technologies provide users with quick and fast sharing capability and the potential to reach a huge swath of other users. The sites also afford the same capabilities to healthcare providers, vendors, pharmaceutical companies, payers and everyone else within the healthcare industry.


To that end, it's nice to see the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) finally catch up with how consumers and patients are sharing information online, especially since medical device manufacturers, pharma companies and other healthcare professionals are are doing the exact same thing.

In drafting a new federal guidance document on social media use, FDA offers medical device manufacturers and pharmaceutical companies insight on how to share benefit and risk information on 23 electronics digital platforms, ranging from Twitter and blogs to online paid search programs. Specifically, it calls for a balance between risk and benefit information posted to online platforms.

The guidance arrived several months after the FDA announced its intention to track social media talk about product risks. "The objective of this requirement is to provide FDA with the resources needed to use social media to inform and evaluate FDA risk communications," a solicitation notice published to the Federal Business Opportunities website in March said.

Doctors, nurses, pharmacists and healthcare consultants from the U.S. make up most of the healthcare professionals who use Twitter, according to research by Creation Healthcare, a London-based research and training consultancy. U.S. healthcare professionals make up 31 percent of the 75,000 worldwide total of healthcare professionals who turn to the social media site to "tweet" information about healthcare policy, research, individual medicines and treatments for the disease.

Still, social media, in general--for med device and pharma companies, as well as health payers and providers--is about actively influencing consumers, educating and empowering them to drive measurable results, according to a Deloitte University Press article published earlier this year.

The Tufts Center for the Study of Drug Development convened 20 pharmaceutical companies and contract research organizations (CROs) to provide insight into how social media was being used in drug research. Some of the findings highlight the worries that pharmaceutical companies have when dealing with social media in general.

As for research sites, 69 of 168 (41.1%) say they have used social media for patient recruitment.

Disconnected Patients and Researchers

In the study we find that:

  • 0% (none) of the companies are soliciting feedback from patients on social
  • 92.9% (13 of 14) of research companies believe that patient input from social communities would be valuable
  • 88.9% (24 of 27) of patients said that sponsor companies should solicit feedback on social channels
  • 81.5% (22 of 27) of patients said that sponsors should solicit feedback on protocol procedures and scheduling

After watching your videos, your audience should feel something. You don't need to be controversial, but you do need to elicit emotion to inspire your viewers into action....


While some content lends itself to emotion more easily than others (a whiteboard video might not be “emotional” in the traditional sense), your content is far more likely to inspire downloads, trials, demos, etc. if it elicits a powerful response fuelling your prospects’ follow through.


And remember, at the end of the day, “emotional” or inspiring content is simply stuff that makes you feel something. It doesn’t really matter if your audience is laughing or crying at the end of your video, but they better be feeling something or you’ll be easily forgotten or skipped over. Ultimately, if your on-screen personas, comedy, or message gets people to like the implied character of your brand, you’ve got the right idea....

...Before we jump into these recommendations, let me make one more point perfectly clear. These are not necessarily recommendations for the perfect LinkedIn profile if you're looking for a job. I am writing this from my own perspective, as someone who is using their LinkedIn profile to connect with influencers, partners or prospects. I already have a business and I am counting on LinkedIn to help me grow that businessand reach more of their nearly 200 million active monthly users.


All of the recommendations below are just that, recommendations. Take 'em or leave 'em however you'd like. Each can be implemented by going to LinkedIn, logging in, clicking on Profile in the top menu and then clicking on the greyEdit button. This will put your profile in edit mode, and you'll be able to change anything you need to. You may also want to take advantage of LinkedIn's suggestions and recommendations by clicking on the blue Complete My Profile button. LinkedIn will ask you a series of probing questions designed to get your profile even more complete....
