digital interface: You are a Complex System

digital interface: You are a Complex System | Complexity | Scoop.it
Larry Schmitt's insight:

What can big data reveal about complex systems. There are a lot of interesting visuals that can be generated but, as the quote in this article says, 'Big Data needs a Big Theory to go with it'. What is that Big Theory? No one yet knows. It certainly is more than a bunch of interesting graphs, charts and images.

Nissan follows bold EV moves with vow of self-driving cars by 2020

Nissan follows bold EV moves with vow of self-driving cars by 2020 | Complexity | Scoop.it
Nissan Motor Co.'s startling announcement last week that it will have self-driving cars ready for dealerships in 2020 thrusts the company into the forefront of an emerging and controversial new technology.
Larry Schmitt's insight:
A piece of evidence that autonomous vehicles may happen faster than most people think they will. Non-linearities in complex system always take people by surprise. Predicting the tipping point is always fraught with uncertainty. Taking out options that the tipping point will occur is the way to go.

A Complex Systems Science Approach to Healthcare Costs and Quality | NECSI | Complexity | Scoop.it
Larry Schmitt's insight:

Human's limitations on understanding the non-linearities in complex systems inevitable lead to unintended consequences. Tools for understanding complexity that are accessible to business people and policy makers are desperatey needed.

Lorien Pratt's curator insight, November 23, 2013 6:50 PM

This paper is chock full of complex systems insights for health care. For example:

- In workgroup competition, the

objective is to be a top performer according to carefully designed metrics that measure both cost and quality.

- The interplay between multiple causes of a single

condition, or multiple aspects of its treatment, makes it difficult for the separated specialists to address such complex problems.

- The current design

of the US healthcare system involves the use of “gatekeepers” who serve to route individuals to the care they need. Evidence suggests that this task has become the rate limiting step.

Oscillatory Thoughts: Non-linear systems

Oscillatory Thoughts: Non-linear systems | Complexity | Scoop.it
Larry Schmitt's insight:

Oscillation is a little appreciated dynamic in human systems. We all oscillate in our mental states and mindsets, sometimes flipping to a new equilibrium. A good book on one aspect of this topic is Butterfly Economics by Paul Ormerod
