On the Nature of Causality in Complex Systems, George F.R. Ellis

Big Bang cosmology, chemical and biological evolutionary theory, and associated sciences have been extraordinarily successful in revealing and enabling us to...
Mythreya Seetharama's insight:

This lecture series from 'Copernicus Centre' titled 'Causal Universe' covers many topics from cosmology to evolution of complexity. Some topics I found particularly interesting are :

1) Is mathematics (and thus physical laws) Descriptive of the nature of reality or prescriptive ?

2) Bottom up and Top down causation in complex systems

3) Hierarchy of structures (knowledge tree Y): We can organize everything that can be known based on the scale of things in a Y diagram. We begin at the bottom with strings/quarks, then move up to molecuels and chemistry. In chemistry we branch: The left branch is inorganic/physical chemistry. Here we move up the scale - Geology to cosmology. On the right branch is the organic chemistry. Here we move up the scale from bio chemistry to biology to social sciences. In this branch information and evolution of complexity plays a very important role.
