What programming language are used in Bioinformatics

What programming language are used in Bioinformatics | Complex Insight - Understanding our world | Scoop.it

Radhoune Aniba used the Github and BitBucket API's to see which programming languages are used in open source bio-informatics applications. Result - Python is becoming widely used, while Perl use appears to be declining with C/C++ being used for additional speed when needed.  Another trend found was that projects increasingly focus on data analysis with standalone tools rather than web or web portals due to data volumes involved. Cell membrane is patterned like a patchwork quilt

Cell membrane is patterned like a patchwork quilt | Complex Insight - Understanding our world | Scoop.it

(Phys.org) -- As the interface between the cell and its environment, the cell membrane, which consists of fats and proteins, fulfils a variety of vital functions. Scientists at the Max Planck Institute of Biochemistry in Martinsried near Munich have performed the first comprehensive analysis of the molecular structure of this boundary layer, and revealed precisely how it is organised. In yeast cells, the entire membrane is made up of independent domains, each containing just one or a few protein types. If a protein is relocated to an inappropriate domain, it may even fail to function. The study shows that the membrane is a kind of patchwork quilt and should help scientists to gain a better understanding of basic cellular processes. Learn more...

Separating signal from noise in living cells

Separating signal from noise in living cells | Complex Insight - Understanding our world | Scoop.it

A mathematician from the University of Bristol has teamed up with a biologist from the University of Edinburgh to address a major problem in molecular biology. The team have constructed a generalised signal-to-noise measure from the variance components to quantify the efficacy of information flow through a biochemical network. To this they created rigorous connections between the concept of intrinsic noise in systems biology, the notion of information capacity used in communications engineering, and a correlation ratio introduced in the 1950s by Alfréd Rényi.   Learn more...

GIS and Agent-Based Modelling: Natural Disasters and Crowdsourcing: Haiti

GIS and Agent-Based Modelling: Natural Disasters and Crowdsourcing: Haiti | Complex Insight - Understanding our world | Scoop.it

Recently researchers’ attention has focused on using crowds of volunteers to help map the infrastructure and devastation caused by natural disasters, such as those in Haiti and Pakistan.  The movie on the Agent Based Modelling blog shows the response to the earthquake by the OpenStreetMap community within 12 hours of the earthquake. Volunteers from around the world used satellite photographs and responses from on the ground to create a revised OpenStreetMap of Haiti in the aftermath of the quake. The map quickly became a main tool for Sear and Rescue (SAR) teams. Similar volunteer initiatives are being used to map Slums in India and Africa to create residence maps to help with urban planning activities and policing. Learn more...

Amazon.com: The Craft of Economics: Lessons from the Heckscher-Ohlin Framework (Ohlin Lectures) (9780262016872): Edward E. Leamer: Books

Edward E.Learner's book is definitely one for the reading list. In the book which describes the history,  evolution and application of the Hecksher--Ohlin framework for global competition, he issues a provocative caveat about economists: "What we do is not science, it's fiction and journalism." Economic theory, he writes, is fiction (stories, loosely connected to the facts); data analysis is journalism (facts, loosely connected to the stories). Rather than titling the two sections of his book Theory and Evidence, he calls them Economic Fiction and Econometric Journalism, explaining, "If you find that startling, that's good. I am trying to keep you awake.".. Learn more...

HTML5 Canvas: An Open Standard for High Performing GIS Map Visualization in Web Browsers

HTML5 Canvas: An Open Standard for High Performing GIS Map Visualization in Web Browsers | Complex Insight - Understanding our world | Scoop.it

This article, by Dino Ravnić, the co-founder and CEO of GIS Cloud, Ltd., provides an overview of existing mapping technologies and the reasons why he decided to build a unique vector mapping engine in an effort to give the Web a full featured GIS. As you need to interact with the data it is not possible if your data are presented as flat raster images. Croatia-based GIS Cloud created and implemented the world's first HTML5 vector mapping engine based on its original tiled vector map engine, which generated vector map tiles in Flash format. The performance it offered was unprecedented. The original system has been adapted for HTML5 Canvas and is now the primary method to deliver all maps at GIS Cloud. The vector map technology uses Leaflet — http://leaflet.cloudmade.com — an excellent modern mapping client library made by CloudMade — to visualize the data. The article is an excellent source of additional info. If like us you are porting desktop code to web - these new mapping developments open a lot of possibilities for traditional desktop geosimulations. Learn more...

Lighting up plant cells to engineer biology

Lighting up plant cells to engineer biology | Complex Insight - Understanding our world | Scoop.it

Cambridge researchers have developed a new technique for measuring and mapping gene and cell activity through fluorescence in living plant tissue. The researchers combine the advanced imaging processes with algorithms that automate quantitative analysis of cell growth and genetic activity within living organisms to precisely reconstruct cellular dynamics – and produce a numerical description that can be used to inform computer models. Using the technique the cellular properties in intact plant tissue can be observed in depth – and be converted to mathematical or informatic descriptions of the living processes. This opens the door for the construction of new computer models for Synthetic Biology and the engineering of living tissue from observed processes. Learn more...

Report on County's GIS Investment Quantifies Benefits

Report on County's GIS Investment Quantifies Benefits | Complex Insight - Understanding our world | Scoop.it

If agent based systems and decision management solutions for complex systems are to be adopted in the commercial world - clear and transparent return on investment methods are needed. An awesome example from the spatial GIS world is King County, Washington (home of Seattle) has recently undertaken an in-depth look at the value that the county has received from their GIS investment. Professor Richard Zerbe from the University of Washington’s Center for Benefit-Cost Analysis conducted the study that spans from 1992 to 2010. The report totals the investment over this 18-year span at $201 million, and the benefits at $775 million.

Vert.x- Effortless asynchronous application development for the modern web and enterprise

vert.x is an interesting development that addresses similar areas to node.js and the actor framework Akka. Vert.x provides an alternative to node.js for asynchronous scalable server with integrated distributed event bus and support for persistance and worker queues. Initial testing shows for certain classes of application - its a lot faster than node.js and takes advantage of the JVM. Using an event bus for message passing (in something similar to Erlang's actors) the system apps can scale over the number of the available cores, without having to allow multi-threaded execution of any verticle code. POtentially very important and worth following. Learn more...
