Simulations of the social organization of large schools of fish whose perception is obstructed

Individual-based models have shown that simple interactions among moving individuals (repulsion, attraction and alignment) result in travelling schools that resemble those of real fish. In most models individuals interact with all neighbours within sensory range which usually includes almost all the individuals of the school. Thus, it implies (almost) global perception. However, in reality in large groups, individuals will only interact with their neighbours close by, because they cannot perceive those farther away, since they are masked by closer ones. Here, we have developed a new model to investigate how such obstruction of perception influences aspects of social organization in schools of up to 10,000 individuals.

Biotechnology innovation for inclusive growth: a study of Indian policies to foster accelerated technology adaptation for affordable development - Vijayaraghavan & Dutz (2012) - World Bank

The recent withholding of approval for transgenic eggplant in India by the Minister for Environment highlights the complications in bringing consensus in regulatory processes. In principle, Indian ability to effectively regulate biotechnology-derived products in healthcare and agriculture should provide a competitive advantage given the lower costs in carrying out such validation, driven by abundant available scientific and clinical labor and the consequent lower total costs of various validation procedures. Currently, the cost of regulations in OECD countries typically leads the private sector to confine regulatory validation to products that have a sufficiently large global market potential. This is a key reason for large multinationals and industrialized country public research bodies not to advance research for neglected diseases, small acreage crops, and low-value agriculture products. If India gains sufficient regulatory capacity, then the products approved in India have the potential to reach other developing countries that have similar product needs in the areas of health and agriculture.

Trends in Big Data requirements

Trends in Big Data requirements | Complex Insight - Understanding our world | Scoop.it

Martin Gale's blog has a good post on big data.  While recognizing at this early stage on the Big Data journey there are several explict use cases. Martin identifies five common business themes. They are as follows:

1.Augmenting a partial view of an entity or process.

2.Understanding people better.

3.Improving management information.

4.Increasing confidence in decision making. 5.Supporting partnership and value creation.

Herding Cats

Herding Cats | Complex Insight - Understanding our world | Scoop.it

I like the herding cats blog since its a great source of ideas for project management. There was an interesting post entitled 'Shouldn't Complexity theory and Emergent Systems start with the mathematics?' While the article concludes with a resounding yes (and I'd argue either start with maths or a computable model)  the more important aspects of the post is that change management approaches that employ tools such as complex systems  need to be informed not niave and therefore verifiable, measurable and built within the reality of the domain change scope - i.e.  the degree of change possible in -a given domain.  Thought provoking post. 20 Professional Examples of Data Visualization

20 Professional Examples of Data Visualization | Complex Insight - Understanding our world | Scoop.it

The purpose of data visualization is to send information to its users in a clear and effective way with the help of graphics. Since any data has to be functional as well as beautifully presented at the same time, you need to do justice to both of these elements. Creating an extremely beautiful visual representation that lacks purpose doesn’t help. Both form and functionality have to be targeted. Those, who look at data visualization from the viewpoint of computer science, find it related to different fields like modeling techniques, information visualization, methods and architectures of interaction, volume, algorithm, and technique visualization and multi-resolution methods. Here are a number of websites to be explored with some great work in this area.

A review of High Performance Computing foundations for scientists

The increase of existing computational capabilities has made simulation emerge as a third discipline of Science, lying midway between experimental and purely theoretical branches [1, 2]. Simulation enables the evaluation of quantities which otherwise would not be accessible, helps to improve experiments and provides new insights on systems which are analysed [3-6]. Knowing the fundamentals of computation can be very useful for scientists, for it can help them to improve the performance of their theoretical models and simulations. This review includes some technical essentials that can be useful to this end, and it is devised as a complement for researchers whose education is focused on scientific issues and not on technological respects. In this document we attempt to discuss the fundamentals of High Performance Computing (HPC) [7] in a way which is easy to understand without much previous background. We sketch the way standard computers and supercomputers work, as well as discuss distributed computing and discuss essential aspects to take into account when running scientific calculations in computers.

SMART CITY: creative, sustainable and user-centred cities | Digital meets Culture

SMART CITY: creative, sustainable and user-centred cities | Digital meets Culture | Complex Insight - Understanding our world | Scoop.it

Growing urbanisation, sustainable development, digital challenge, users’ involvement, economic and cultural attractiveness, governance, are part of the main stakes cities have to tackle. To face this plural urban reality, it has become necessary to find adapted means to conceive cities and territorial development. A better consideration of the uses, the creation of real consultation methods have priority. In France, a full-scale experimentation has been led in the south of Paris since 2007, in partnership with the Cité Internationale Universitaire de Paris to try and tackle exactly some of these challenges. Geospatial Networking in the Roman Empire | HISTORIES OF THINGS TO COME | Complex Insight - Understanding our world | Scoop.it

At Stanford, Classics professor Walter Scheidel and digital humanities developer Elijah Meeks, with geographer/Web developer Karl Grossner and Noemi Alvarez have produced a geospatial networking system called ORBIS, which is like a Google Maps of the Roman Empire. The map allows users to explore the empire via the Romans' famous road system and sea routes, with embedded contemporary travel costs in denarii. "This application facilitates simulation of the structural properties of the network, which are of particular value for our understanding of the historical significance of cost in mediating connectivity within the Roman Empire." As we build out somulation models of economies and disease, using tools such as Robis can hep us test hypothese against well documented historical records. Interesting. Learn more...
