Geospatial Networking in the Roman Empire | HISTORIES OF THINGS TO COME

Geospatial Networking in the Roman Empire | HISTORIES OF THINGS TO COME | Complex Insight - Understanding our world | Scoop.it

At Stanford, Classics professor Walter Scheidel and digital humanities developer Elijah Meeks, with geographer/Web developer Karl Grossner and Noemi Alvarez have produced a geospatial networking system called ORBIS, which is like a Google Maps of the Roman Empire. The map allows users to explore the empire via the Romans' famous road system and sea routes, with embedded contemporary travel costs in denarii. "This application facilitates simulation of the structural properties of the network, which are of particular value for our understanding of the historical significance of cost in mediating connectivity within the Roman Empire." As we build out somulation models of economies and disease, using tools such as Robis can hep us test hypothese against well documented historical records. Interesting. Learn more...

Diffusion Adaptation over Networks

Adaptive networks are well-suited to perform decentralized information processing and optimization tasks and to model various types of self organized and complex behavior encountered in nature. Adaptive networks consist of a collection of agents with processing and learning abilities. The agents are linked together through a connection topology, and they cooperate with each other through local interactions to solve distributed inference problems in real-time. The continuous diffusion of information across the network enables agents to adapt their performance in relation to changing data and network conditions; it also results in improved adaptation and learning performance relative to non-cooperative networks. This article provides an overview of diffusion strategies for adaptation and learning over networks.

Herding Cats

Herding Cats | Complex Insight - Understanding our world | Scoop.it

I like the herding cats blog since its a great source of ideas for project management. There was an interesting post entitled 'Shouldn't Complexity theory and Emergent Systems start with the mathematics?' While the article concludes with a resounding yes (and I'd argue either start with maths or a computable model)  the more important aspects of the post is that change management approaches that employ tools such as complex systems  need to be informed not niave and therefore verifiable, measurable and built within the reality of the domain change scope - i.e.  the degree of change possible in -a given domain.  Thought provoking post. Leap 3D Offers Amazing Gesture-Based Control of Your Computer for Just $70 | Singularity Hub | Complex Insight - Understanding our world | Scoop.it

It is going to be interesting finding out how much of this is hype and how much of this is reality.  Initial videos are intriguing. A startup called Leap Motion has announced the development of the Leap 3D motion control device that is sensitive down to 1/100 of a millimeter – that’s 200 times better than other sensors (i.e: Kinect). At this resolution, the Leap software is able to resolve the motion of individual fingers, allowing for intuitive gesture controls like pinch-to-zoom, highly accurate virtual drawing, and manipulation of 3D models.
