Phillip Trotter's insight:

The output of DARPA’s capstone ISR processing program will help  analysts in multiple industries (not just defence and military)  to make sense of the huge volumes of intelligence-rich information available to them from existing sensors and data sources. It will be worth tracking the BAE team and DARPA reports that are made public over the period of the program  at conferences to gain insights into display modalities used and types of data fusion techniques employed to see implications and opportunities for civilian applications.

What Do Ants Know That We Don't? | Wired Opinion | Wired.com

What Do Ants Know That We Don't? | Wired Opinion | Wired.com | Complex Insight - Understanding our world | Scoop.it
Ever notice how ant colonies so successfully explore food at 4th of July picnics? It’s all done without any central control.
Phillip Trotter's insight:

Biomorphic design - where we take design inspiration from nature is a growing trend in multiple disciplines from architecture and materials science through to network technologies. Ant communication is a well studied - though not necessarily widely understood communication network and like many natural evolved solutions offers many subtle solutions to problems we are only beginning to comprehend.  A nice light introductory article -by Deborah Gordon.

iOS7 design review

iOS7 design review | Complex Insight - Understanding our world | Scoop.it
Thoughts on the new user interface style and aesthetics of iOS 7.

Via Jed Fisher
Phillip Trotter's insight:

Good find by Jed -  and a very valuable UI review. I would strongly suggest reading Matt's earlier piece on Ive's design approach: http://mattgemmell.com/2013/05/12/tail-wagging/ seriously worth readin if you are building products and user experiences.

Jed Fisher's curator insight, June 13, 2013 4:53 AM

Design topic.

Ok since the world has gone iOS7 mad :-) Here is a link to the most interesting design review that i have found. Matt writes about colors vs borders, light, and content first. It's a really nice design overview.

A New Mobile UX Design Material | Smashing UX Design

A New Mobile UX Design Material | Smashing UX Design | Complex Insight - Understanding our world | Scoop.it

I was 13 years old when my local public library got a copy of Frank Thomas and Ollie Johnson's  1981 book "The Illusion of Life: Disney Animation". I borrowed that book as often as I possibly could, I learned to sketch and animate from it and used to practise drawing the characters and forms within it.  The book effectively documents the principles that Disney Studio's helped develop that define compelling animation.  There is a great article on UX design in Smashing Magazine explaining how the concepts in the book relate to modern user interface design. Worth reading. Click on the image or title to learn more.

Otto Scharmer's Blog

Otto Scharmer's Blog | Complex Insight - Understanding our world | Scoop.it

1 The root cause of today’s global crises originates between our ears — in our outdated paradigms of economic thought

2 The blind spot of modern economic thought can be summarized with a single word: consciousness

3 The evolution of the economy and of modern economic thought mirrors the footprints of an evolving human consciousness

4 To paraphrase Einstein, the problem with today’s capitalism is that we are trying “to solve problems with the same consciousness that created them

5 ”Helping stakeholder systems shift their way of operating from ego-system to eco-system awareness is the central leadership challenge of our time

6 The shift from ego-system to eco-system awareness requires a journey that involves walking in the shoes of other stakeholders and attending to the three instruments of inner knowing: open mind, open heart, and open will

7 Addressing the current global crisis at its root calls for a 4.0 update of the economic operating system through reframing eight “acupuncture points” of the global economic system

8 Shifting the system to 4.0 requires a threefold revolution

9 We need new types of innovation infrastructures in order to build collective leadership capacities on a massive scale

10 The shift from an ego-system to an eco-system economy requires a global movement that needs to be supported by a new leadership school. That school should create collaborative platforms across sectors, systems, and generations and work through integrating science, art, and the practice of profound, awareness-based change

Phillip Trotter's insight:

thought provoking and potentially a useful discussion framework.

Fully Integrated Thinking - Process from HOK/GUILD Partnerships

Fully Integrated Thinking - Process from HOK/GUILD Partnerships | Complex Insight - Understanding our world | Scoop.it

FIT is a design process incorporating multiple stakeholder viewpoints andhelps integrate sustainability principles into the full range of the design cycle.  T he FIT process helps designers to understand the ‘genius of place’ and better leverage existing resources by linking place, challenges and outcomes.  It helps break down barriers between municipal and jurisdictional borders and facilitates communication across disciplines by focusing on commonly understand functions.  These factors can help reveal symbiotic relationships and solutions that address multiple problems.  The FIT process is scalable and generalizable across a wide range of situations.

Phillip Trotter's insight:

While there are many similar design processes with similar aims to HOK 's FIT, FIT is getting some traction in various projects world wide - especially in development. This is a good overview article introducing key tools and illustrated with examples.

The Spectacular Thefts of Apollo Robbins, Gentleman Pickpocket

The Spectacular Thefts of Apollo Robbins, Gentleman Pickpocket | Complex Insight - Understanding our world | Scoop.it
Apollo Robbins takes things from people’s jackets, pants, purses, wrists, fingers, and necks, then returns them in amusing and mind-boggling ways.
Phillip Trotter's insight:

Understanding how our perception system and sense of time and space work are increasingly key to how we design great user interfaces and user expereinces. Apollo Robbins is one of my favourite entertainers - a magician pickpocket, who in the National Geographic series BrainGames - explains how our perception and attention can be manipulated and managed to distract and misfocus.   Great article by Adam Green in the New Yorker on his background, work and approach to what he does. If you like magic and interested in human perception its well worth a read.

WiSee

WiSee | Complex Insight - Understanding our world | Scoop.it

WiSee is a novel interaction interface that leverages ongoing wireless transmissions in the environment (e.g., WiFi) to enable whole-home sensing and recognition of human gestures. Since wireless signals do not require line-of-sight and can traverse through walls, WiSee can enable whole-home gesture recognition using few wireless sources (e.g., a Wi-Fi router and a few mobile devices in the living room).

Phillip Trotter's insight:

WiSee has been developed by researchers at University of Washington and promises to bring a sense of awareness using wifi to buildings and environments. Very interesting indeed. Click on logo or title to learn more.

Increasingly, designers need to present information in ways that aid their audience's thinking process. Fortunately, results from the relatively new science of human visual perception provide valuable guidance. In Visual Thinking for Design, Colin Ware takes what we now know about perception, cognition, and attention and transforms it into concrete advice that designers can directly apply. He  demonstrates how designs can be considered as tools for cognition - extensions of the viewer's brain in much the same way that a hammer is an extension of the user's hand. Experienced professional designers and students alike will learn how to maximize the power of the information tools they design for the people who use them. One for the reading list.

Book Review: Living with Complexity, by Donald Norman - Core77

Book Review: Living with Complexity, by Donald Norman - Core77 | Complex Insight - Understanding our world | Scoop.it

The Design  of Everyday Things by Don Norman is one of my favourite books since it makes a number of design and interaction ideas easily accessible. His new book Living with Complexity is reviewed over at Core77. The underlying thesis is that what makes something simple or complex is whether the user understands the conceptual model. Unfortunately, to make our lives easier, people need progressively more complex and powerful tools. The key to making them useful is (1) meaningful communication and (2) compelling conceptual models. The review and the book are both worth reading. Learn more.
