Develop an experience, not just a product | The Venture Company | Competitive Edge | Scoop.it

My 3-year-old daughter uses my iPhone to play music videos and YouTube videos and has not touched a PC (or better, a Mac) yet. With the same content available on either she's obviously seen me operate my Mac and looks over my shoulder now and then, but finds all the keys and even the "Magic-mouse" complicated. Clearly a usage experience is more important to her than sheer processing power. Sounds familiar doesn't it? Nintendo anyone? What I see in so many early business plans today is the old-fashioned notion of deep technology expertise, something most traditional investors still harp on. I see too many BMW engines being developed without attention being paid to the development of The Ultimate Driving Experience®. True, you can't build the driving experience without great engines, but BMW, like no other vendor understands that the total experience is the selling point. In the end, technology will become commoditized and its differentiation will be determined by the way it interacts...

5 Simple Things You Should Do Every Sunday Night to Prepare for the Week Ahead

5 Simple Things You Should Do Every Sunday Night to Prepare for the Week Ahead | Competitive Edge | Scoop.it
Failure to prepare means preparing to fail.

Being productive is all about preparation. If you know what you need to do ahead of time, you will know exactly where to dive in as soon as you get started. On the flip-side, if you do not take the time to prepare, you will find yourself flustered and uncertain because you now have to think through whatever it is you need to do.

Having a great week does not start on Monday. It starts Sunday night. It begins with what you set in your mind you are going to do, before you actually set out to do it.

Here are a few ways to "get your mind right" for the week ahead:

What would you do if you had $10 million and 10 years to live?

What would you do if you had $10 million and 10 years to live? | Competitive Edge | Scoop.it

If you suddenly received $10 million dollars (after-tax) and at the same time a diagnosis that you had only 10 years to live, what would you start doing? What would you stop doing?

These are two questions I love to ask groups when I’m conducting financial-planning and financial-literacy workshops for women. My objective is to help them accurately identify their deepest values and most important life goals, independent of financial constraints and the all-too-common excuse that there’s always tomorrow. I particularly like this pair of questions because they force participants to engage with the twin concepts of limited resources and limited time. This in turn forces longstanding internal conflicts (financial, emotional or otherwise) to bubble right up to the surface. Read more: click image or title.

Don’t just pardon Edward Snowden; give the man a medal

Don’t just pardon Edward Snowden; give the man a medal | Competitive Edge | Scoop.it

As Barack Obama’s second term comes to an end, an increasingly loud chorus of voices are calling for a dramatic final presidential act: the pardoning of Edward Snowden. Authoritarians are horrified by this, and, as usual, they are wrong. A pardon really isn’t enough. As I’ve argued before, Snowden deserves a medal.

I can hear the outraged naysayers already. “It was treason!” “He broke the law!” “He should have followed official channels!” They’ll probably point to the House Intelligence Committee report on Snowden, turning a wilfully blind eye to what Barton Gellman calls its “aggressive dishonesty.”

But whether you revere or despise Edward Snowden as a person, the cold hard fact is that America is a far better place because of Edward Snowden’s so-called “treason” — even if it was illegal. A certain apoplectic subset of the intellectual lazy seem unable to cope with the notion that an action can be simultaneously “against well-intended laws” and “good” — and yet, this is so, and the Snowden revelations act as a superb object example. 8 Ways I've Coped with Failure in My Life | Competitive Edge | Scoop.it
You will fail over and over and over. It's getting back up that makes you the person you are.

Several years back I had purchased Organize.com, a thriving ecommerce company with millions in monthly sales. I came into this company thinking I was the bomb.com. I was 4 months newly married and everything I had worked for in my life was gone.

Guess what helped me get past all the pain?  Coping with failure. You've probably heard that message before. And, while there's a lot of truth to that, it still doesn't change the fact failure is one of the hardest experiences you'll have to overcome in your life.

To Achieve Your Goals You Must Become Attractive On the Inside

To Achieve Your Goals You Must Become Attractive On the Inside | Competitive Edge | Scoop.it
Your success is always parallel to your level of personal development. Thankfully, we can always grow.

Half of this year is gone. Have you reached 50 percent of your goals?

If one of your goals is to be successful -- in any area of your life or career -- before 2016 comes to an end, the one thing you must to do is to become an attractive person. I'm not talking about external attractiveness, but rather the internal kind. As the late motivational speaker Jim Rohn once said, “Success is something you attract by the person you become.”

If you want success and all that it brings, you have to become a better, more attractive person. Period. “Your level of success will rarely exceed your level of personal development,” Rohn once said. The personal development he referred to can be knowledge, experience, mindset or beliefs.

You become attractive by developing yourself into the person you know you need to be in order to attract, create and sustain the level of success you want in your life. Well, how in the world do you do that? I'm glad you asked. To read more: click image or title.

Self-made billionaire Richard Branson has a surprisingly simple productivity trick.

Between overseeing hundreds of companies, working out each morning, and even designing elaborate pranks, self-made billionaire and Virgin Group founder Richard Branson packs a lot into each day.

It turns out, the key to his productivity is a habit anyone can adopt:punctuality.

"If you want to be more productive, then start at the start: get there on time,"he wrote in a recent post on Virgin's website. "Whether it is a meeting, a flight, an appointment or a date, it's important to ensure you are there when you say you will be there. This may feel like an old-fashioned tip to give, but it has served me well for five decades in business." Read more: click image or title.

7 Toxic Thoughts That Are Sabotaging Your Success

7 Toxic Thoughts That Are Sabotaging Your Success | Competitive Edge | Scoop.it

All actions result from thought, so it's the thoughts that really matter.

Your thoughts are powerful. It may sound farfetched to say that what you believe will come true and what you think about will come to you.

But it's not really such a stretch. Your thoughts are directly connected to your actions and therefore to your outcomes. That means they play a significant role in your success or failure.

Good thoughts give you confidence and empower you to act; negative thoughts can keep you quiet and hold you back.

Even successful people find the wrong thoughts can lead to derailed plans and stalled momentum, and they learn to steer clear of toxic zones. As you direct your own path away from unsupportive, harmful thinking toward positivity, here are six areas you definitely want to avoid: Read more: click image or title.

LeBron James' business manager Maverick Carter reveals his top 3 negotiating tips

LeBron James' business manager Maverick Carter reveals his top 3 negotiating tips | Competitive Edge | Scoop.it
The man behind King James' billion-dollar Nike deal says when you walk into a negotiation, you should be clear on three things.

First, he said, you have to know exactly what you want "and be able to clearly articulate those things so the room and anyone who's in the room can understand it."

Second, you have to know exactly what the other person wants. "You have to know what they want, what they need, and what's most important to them," said Carter. "And you have to know that before you walk in the room —you have to not be guessing at that."

Finally, he said, "you have to understand that every negotiation isn't about taking everything off the table."

"It's cliche, but you have to try and make sure the other side feels good and you feel good. Because in my business, when I make a deal, it just means once we're done negotiating, we have to go off and work together. So I don't want the other side being all p----d off at me." When things get tough, remember this.

When it comes to building something of value -- whether that's a business, a joint venture, a brand, or even yourself as an individual -- the most important thing to remember is that "challenge" is part of the process.

All too often, people seek the easy road, as if that's the path they would prefer to travel.  The truth is, it's not.  You don't learn anything when the wind is always at your back.  You don't improve your problem-solving skills when there's never a problem to solve.

Memo To Donald Trump And Ryan Lochte: Here’s How To Give A Proper Apology

Memo To Donald Trump And Ryan Lochte: Here’s How To Give A Proper Apology | Competitive Edge | Scoop.it

Never ruin an apology with an excuse." – Ben Franklin

In less than 24 hours, two of the biggest stories in the world involved some kind of "apology" for offensive behavior and/or lying. Last night in Charlotte, North Carolina, the notoriously unrepentant Donald Trump shocked observers by expressing "regret" for words that "may have caused personal pain." And this morning Ryan Lochte issued a widely criticized apology for "not being more careful" with how he described an incident in which he lied about being held up at gunpoint in Rio de Janeiro.

Neither of them qualified as a true apology since they both offered an excuse for their behavior, failed to give a detailed account of what happened, failed to acknowledge or specify the hurt and damage they’d caused, and didn't take responsibility for the situation.

A proper apology is "an exercise in honesty, accountability, and compassion," says interfaith minister Lauren Bloom, the author of The Art of the Apology. Of course, it's difficult and nerve-wracking and fraught with tension. But it's the right thing to do. So above all, be sincere: "It's the essence of an apology."...

Successful people adopt certain mindset changes that help them achieve unprecedented success.

Nowhere today is this more apparent than in the business world. Who wants to read a 40-page business plan nowadays? I sure don’t.

Change often stems from external factors; things or events that are outside our control. And many people spend an unnecessary amount of time and energy focusing on them. Successful people accept that change has and will continue to happen for eternity.
