What would you do if you had $10 million and 10 years to live?

What would you do if you had $10 million and 10 years to live? | Competitive Edge | Scoop.it

If you suddenly received $10 million dollars (after-tax) and at the same time a diagnosis that you had only 10 years to live, what would you start doing? What would you stop doing?

These are two questions I love to ask groups when I’m conducting financial-planning and financial-literacy workshops for women. My objective is to help them accurately identify their deepest values and most important life goals, independent of financial constraints and the all-too-common excuse that there’s always tomorrow. I particularly like this pair of questions because they force participants to engage with the twin concepts of limited resources and limited time. This in turn forces longstanding internal conflicts (financial, emotional or otherwise) to bubble right up to the surface. Read more: click image or title.

How a woman who went from $12 in her bank account to millionaire status learned to stop sabotaging her success

How a woman who went from $12 in her bank account to millionaire status learned to stop sabotaging her success | Competitive Edge | Scoop.it

Lisa Nichols "wasn't comfortable making $1 million."

Lisa Nichols didn't grow up with money.

After a humble childhood, she found herself a single parent with a mere $12 in her bank account at age 27. She needed government assistance to survive.

Today, her net worth exceeds $1 million, thanks largely to the success of her company, Motivating the Masses, which offers business coaching and professional development to small business owners.

The journey to millionaire status was not always a positive thing for Nichols, she explained during an interview with Essence:

The Secret To Being Mentally Strong May Be Hidden In A Small Norwegian City

The Secret To Being Mentally Strong May Be Hidden In A Small Norwegian City | Competitive Edge | Scoop.it
A Stanford Researcher went to the north of Norway to study people's reaction to winter. She was surprised by what she found.

Absurdly Driven looks at the world of business with a skeptical eye and a firmly rooted tongue in cheek.

Winter blows, doesn't it?

It blows cold into your ears, damp into your bones and darkness into your very core.

You don't want to get out of bed. You don't have enough energy. You wish the whole thing would just get lost.

Some people suffer far beyond mere discomfort. They get seasonal affective disorder, which can be extremely debilitating.

Stanford University researcher Kari Leibowitz thought she'd find out how those who live in Tromsø, Norway respond to winter.

Tromsø is 200 miles north of the Arctic Circle. It's an island where the sun doesn't bother coming up over the horizon for two months of the year. Despite that, 70,000 people live there.

Here's the strange thing: They don't appear to be all that miserable.

At least that's what Leibowitz found, which made her wonder about humans and the way they approach certain problems. Specifically, these Norwegian humans who seem to actually thrive amid all this dark and foreboding.

Leibowitz's tentative conclusion: It's their mindset. Read more: click image or title.

Is Self Doubt Holding You Back? 5 Ways to Banish Fear of Rejection

Use these simple methods to dismiss insecurity and welcome risk.

The word rejection stems from the Latin word, rejectio, meaning throwing back. Isn't that the perfect way to look at the act of rejection? Someone is simply tossing the ball back in your court to take the next steps.

Yet a pervasive fear of rejection is often why entrepreneurs hold back and take excessive caution. So excessive that it can keep even the most promising businesses from thriving.

How do you know if you have a fear of rejection?

A great idea? Don't keep on thinking about it, turning around in circles, start somewhere. Jot down your main bullet points, sketch, find partners, create, start, do it. Once it's moving it's like a train: hard to stop.

How to Increase Productivity By Working Fewer Hours

How to Increase Productivity By Working Fewer Hours | Competitive Edge | Scoop.it

This CEO cut his employees' workday down to only 5 hours. The result: Happier workers and soaring profits.

You may be paying your employees for an eight-hour day, but the truth is most of them are doing about two-three hours of real work, and just taking all day to do it. Stephan Aarstol, co-founder and CEO of Tower Paddle Boards, says a ton of time is squandered throughout the day and even that productivity is faked to avoid the risk of getting fired.

In response to these facts, Aarstol cut his employees' workday to just five hours. The catch? With increased pressure to perform, employees had to teach themselves to be highly productive. If they couldn't do it they would be fired, but his team met the challenge--and loved it. "With our five-hour workday, we've created a workweek better than most people's vacation weeks," says Aarstol. "Our workers have moved into a world of abundance, not scarcity, because we've massively shifted their quality of life by giving them the only scarce thing left... their time."

Aarstol outlines the specifics in his book, The Five-Hour Workday. By using the five-hour workday, the company was able to become one of the fastest growing in the nation. Here's a preview of the theory he suggests in our recent interview. Read more: click image or title.

10 signs you're burning out — and how to stop it

10 signs you're burning out — and how to stop it | Competitive Edge | Scoop.it
Before you can treat and even prevent burnout, you need to recognize the warning signs.

This post from LinkedIn Influencer Travis Bradberry appeared originally on LinkedIn.

Even the best jobs can lead to burnout. The harder you work and the more motivated you are to succeed, the easier it is to get in over your head.

The prevalence of burnout is increasing as technology further blurs the line between work and home. New research from the American Psychological Association and the National Opinion Research Center at the University of Chicago reported the following:

  • 48% of Americans experienced increased stress over the past 5 years
  • 31% of employed adults have difficulty managing their work and family responsibilities
  • 53% say work leaves them "overtired and overwhelmed."

A Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) poll found that “burnout from my current job” was one of the top reasons that people quit. Read more: click image or title.

Solopreneur: 8 Ways To Stay Motivated When Working For Yourself

Solopreneur: 8 Ways To Stay Motivated When Working For Yourself | Competitive Edge | Scoop.it
Be excellent at one thing rather than mediocre at many.

It was fall 2014, and I was stuck.

You may be able to relate.

When you’re building something – a business, a blog, a website – you’re constantly learning and taking in information, and all of that information can easily become overwhelming.

I wanted to research so many things and incorporate them into Unsettle and test different theories, but my brain was on overload.

And what resulted? Nothing. I didn’t do anything, except “research.”

I didn’t produce (though I told myself I was being productive), and I realized a few weeks before my launch date that I didn’t have much prepared.

When I realized this, I stopped myself from researching any further and wrote down all of the principles I knew about creating a successful lifestyle business.

Thereafter, I referred to them when I’d get lost, overwhelmed or feel unmotivated.

These became my guiding principles in creating this website, and they take the pressure off my mind by guiding it in the right direction.

Maybe they’ll help you, too:

“You must be very patient, very persistent. The world isn’t going to shower gold coins on you just because you have a good idea. You’re going to have to work like crazy to bring that idea to the attention of people. They’re not going to buy it unless they know about it.” -Herb Kelleher, Co-founder of Southwest Arilines.

What a great quote by Herb Kelleher of Southwest Airlines. We see all these people with 'great ideas' looking for millions of dollars. No Venture Capitalist or Angel Investor is going to shoot money at you unless they see the proof that you can execute it. Actually, it's more than that, they need to see that you ARE executing it.
