As I continue to try and educate my clients in the elusive world of SEO marketing I find myself increasingly coming across the subject of social signals.

'Simply put – a social signal is a link from someone’s social networking profile to your web page. If you were to click on the ‘like’ button next to this very blog post then you, my friend, have given me a ‘social signal’.

They're what drives my websites today. Search engines are leaving the prospect of figuring which content is good or bad up to the users themselves. The Social Media Fog is Rolling In

The Social Media Fog is Rolling In | Company Online Ordering, Trade shows, Event gifts, Speaker Gifts, Employee recognition programs, Golf and sporting events | Scoop.it

Malcolm De Leo shows how to cut through the fog of Social Media and learn through the art of listening. ... What is the social media fog? It’s about what volume is doing to your marketing program. Think about it. Everyone gets the point that they need to be marketing in the social space. This is why pushing content still represents about 80% of efforts in social media programs, leaving only 20% for pull. Some might argue what the balance between pushing content and pulling information to garner insight is changing and I wouldn’t argue with that. The reality, however, is that this equilibrium remains unbalanced. And because many of us are still more concerned with pushing out their message to the market than understanding the market, there is risk in the strategy. Why? Because no one would argue that the volume of content is growing exponentially. If there was a word that was faster than exponentially, we would use it when discussing social data creation. This is where the social media fog comes in. WHAT IS THE SOCIAL MEDIA FOG? Your efforts to market under these conditions is guesswork (at best) without listening....

It's time to optimize for social search

It's time to optimize for social search | Company Online Ordering, Trade shows, Event gifts, Speaker Gifts, Employee recognition programs, Golf and sporting events | Scoop.it

The rate at which people share information (profound and profane alike) on sites like Facebook, Twitter and YouTube is staggering.

Social media properties have clearly made the processes of creating and sharing content a compelling activity for everyone. Yet the story is altogether different when it comes to retrieving content. Ever tried to search for an old post in Facebook? Pretty difficult if the update was more than a month old. Ever tried to search for tweets older than a week using Twitter search? Mission impossible.

SEO isn’t just for search engines any more — it’s also for social media as part of a broad Social Media Optimization strategy.

Ness Crouch's curator insight, June 22, 2013 2:05 PM

Excellent article and video. Looking at the wonderful world of the internet and curation. The idea of curation of online content has become more and more inportant with the exponential growth of content on the world wide web. Being able to organise and manage all of the content is important.

Curation is about making good choices about what you share and putting it into a context for themselves and others. Being enthusiastic and thoughtful about what you choose is a way of showing what you are finding and sharing is signficant and worthwhile.

Finding the most interesting and valuable things and sharing that is the key. What you want and what you are interested in is important but you also need to consider your audience.

Why Rituals Work: Scientific American

Why Rituals Work: Scientific American | Company Online Ordering, Trade shows, Event gifts, Speaker Gifts, Employee recognition programs, Golf and sporting events | Scoop.it

Recent research suggests that rituals may be more rational than they appear. Why? Because even simple rituals can be extremely effective. Rituals performed after experiencing losses – from loved ones to lotteries – do alleviate grief, and rituals performed before high-pressure tasks – like singing in public – do in fact reduce anxiety and increase people’s confidence. What’s more, rituals appear to benefit even people who claim not to believe that rituals work. While anthropologists have documented rituals across cultures, this earlier research has been primarily observational. Recently, a series of investigations by psychologists have revealed intriguing new results demonstrating that rituals can have a causal impact on people’s thoughts, feelings, and behaviors.

The Future Of SEO in a Socially Driven World

The Future Of SEO in a Socially Driven World | Company Online Ordering, Trade shows, Event gifts, Speaker Gifts, Employee recognition programs, Golf and sporting events | Scoop.it

If SEO is dead, social media will be, too, in another five years.

In today’s search world, there’s a lot of talk about how social is “taking over,” how “content is king,” and how search engine optimization is “dead” – with search updates like Penguin and Panda hitting the final nails on the coffin. Sounds very dramatic, doesn’t it?

Yes, social is more significant than ever. But, it is too early to draw any conclusions about the death of SEO based on the patterns that we’re seeing. If anything, what we’re seeing today are the after effects of a healthy transition.

Maybe this is something that you've always wanted to do? Have your iPad apps organized in alphabetical order. This would be a nightmare for me (a visual learner) as more often than not I don't necessarily know the name of the app but I know what the icon looks like (or the folder that I have put it into). I choose to organize my apps into folders eg ABC's, Word Work, Nurturing Thinking etc. Keep in mind though I use my device predominantly for 'modelling' and to inform others so I have hundreds (did I say hundreds.....my 64gb device is almost full AGAIN).

If though, you have individual devices assigned to your classroom that are not jam packed with too many Apps, this may be just the thing for you!

John Pearce's curator insight, May 8, 2013 6:39 PM

The Three Pillars Of SEO In 2013: Content, Links, And Social Media | Company Online Ordering, Trade shows, Event gifts, Speaker Gifts, Employee recognition programs, Golf and sporting events | Scoop.it

A good SEO strategy is the difference between your business easily being found online and getting lost in the noise of thousands of other businesses trying to stand out. With Google’s ever-changing algorithm, it can be difficult to know what’s effective here and now.

In 2013, success in SEO hinges on businesses putting together a robust combination strategy that brings together an integrated web of great content, credible links, and social signals. Each of these pieces supports the other, providing tremendous value to readers, building your authority and brand value, and distributing your content across new channels. Here are the highlights of what to think about in terms of each of the three pillars of great SEO.

(From the article): If you are a chronic multitasker, there is good news: You are never too old (or too young) to be proactive about brain health and performance. Recent studies provide evidence that adopting healthier thinking habits and improved cognitive strategies can rejuvenate your mind, reversing its clock by decades.

When you train your brain to think more strategically and efficiently, measurable improvements register on the biological level. Our own studies show that after only six hours of training, subjects can experience upsurges in neuron-nourishing blood flow, the genesis of new brain cells, improved communication between regions of the brain and increased white matter growth.
