There Are 400,000 Unprocessed Rape Kits in the U.S. How Can This Be? | Community Village Daily | Scoop.it

Actress Mariska Hargitay is producing a documentary about America's rape kit backlog.

"Nora Caplan-Bricker of the New Republic notes:

After New York City processed its 17,000-kit backlog in 2001, the arrest rate for rape cases jumped from 40 percent to 70 percent, reports Erin Delmore at MSNBC. In Ohio, going through 4,000 kits led to 58 cases, and in Detroit, where an 11,000-kit backlog remains, analyzing the first 10 percent of kits led law enforcement to 46 serial rapists."

Dr. Amos Wilson on racism

Dr. Amos Wilson on racism | Community Village Daily | Scoop.it

“It has little to do with overt race hatred or with negative racial attitudes, or with the projection of racial stereotypes … or with whites not understanding the nature of their racism; that’s not it. And when you define it in terms of attitude you find yourself then solving the wrong problems. These people will stop expressing those negative attitudes, you see.

They will smile more regularly at you. They will even marry you and go to bed with you, sleep with you, but you will note that the effects of racism, the effects of poverty and all of these other things will continue. But not only do they continue, they increase.

Ultimately you must recognize that racism involves the power of one race to impose its will upon another. That ultimately then, it is about power, and we have to face that fact. Whites engage in racism because they have the power to do so. And if we are to end white racism, then we must end white power.”

Testimony: DHS agents admit reports falsified

Testimony: DHS agents admit reports falsified | Community Village Daily | Scoop.it
A special agent who replaced a Department of Homeland Investigations-Office of Inspector General supervisor in McAllen testified Monday that he couldn’t believe several agents told him they falsified reports.
Community Village Sites's insight:

I didn't see in the article what information was falsified.

However, the article goes on to say:

"As part of that process, Green would fill out a file review worksheet and place it with the case file, he testified. The file review worksheet would identify what work had been done on cases and set goals for agents to work toward.

...

In March 2012, when Green was set to conduct his second round of file reviews, he discovered that most of the 100 or so cases were missing the worksheets, which had been there during the first review, he testified."

I, too, am Oxford.

I, too, am Oxford. | Community Village Daily | Scoop.it

"Our project was inspired by the recent ‘I, too, am Harvard’ initiative. The Harvard project resonated with a sense of communal disaffection that students of colour at Oxford have with the University. The sharing of the Buzzfeed article ‘I, too, am Harvard’ on the online Oxford based race forum, ‘Skin Deep’ led to students quickly self organising a photoshoot within the same week. A message that was consistently reaffirmed throughout the day was that students in their daily encounters at Oxford are made to feel different and Othered from the Oxford community.Hopefully this project will demonstrate that despite there being a greater number of students of colour studying at Oxford now than there has ever been before, there are still issues that need to be discussed. In participating in ‘I, Too, Am Oxford,’ students of colour are demanding that a discussion on race be taken seriously and that real institutional change occur."

Combating the Misrepresentation of Native Americans, Through Photos

Combating the Misrepresentation of Native Americans, Through Photos | Community Village Daily | Scoop.it
Last December, Native American photographer Matika Wilbur embarked upon a journey with a staggeringly ambitious goal -- over the next few years, she hopes to photograph members of every single Native American tribe. There were 562 recognized by the federal government when she started (and 566 now), hence the project's title: Project 562.

The Triple Package Review: Debunking Amy Chua and Jed Rubenfeld | Prerna Lal | Community Village Daily | Scoop.it

"In their newly released book, The Triple Package, Amy Chua and Jed Rubenfeld propose that some groups are naturally better than the others due to certain cultural traits they possess. I was on HuffPost Live to discuss the book, and to debunk its central notions, which you can watch here:"

Community Village Sites's insight:

Prerna Lal's article covers:

  1. Amazed about the publicity and attention that this book is receiving because it is saying nothing new
  2. The Triple Package is ahistorical
  3. Perpetuates the model minority myth, which then justifies anti-black racism
  4. Dangerously suggests that we have moved beyond racism, which is simply not true

Stand Your Ground!!!

Stand Your Ground!!! | Community Village Daily | Scoop.it

"History has proven there is only one way to get the attention of unmovable ideologies to achieve change. Matching and protests are strategies, which is nothing more than a good show for the cameras. For example, the March on Washington and the Million Man March produced little in terms of measurable results. On the other hand, BOYCOTT’s work – the Birmingham Bus Boycott and the Martin Luther King Holiday Boycott on the state of Arizona – WORKED! It is time to stop BS-ing and BOYCOTT FLORIDA and everything connected to it. We will then get change. And that’s my thought provoking perspective…"
