Fashion Models Vie With Engineers for Skilled-Worker Visas

Fashion Models Vie With Engineers for Skilled-Worker Visas | Community Village Daily | Scoop.it

"The U.S. government grants hundreds of visas to models every year. Although more than half don’t have high school diplomas, according to a Brookings Institution analysis of federal data, the government puts them in the same H-1B category as scientists and software engineers, who need a college degree to qualify. Fashion models only have to show immigration officials that they’re well-known in the industry."

1 in 4 fashion models immigrating to the U.S. are from Brazil.

One percent of H-1B visas go to fashion models - approximately 800 per year.

Community Village Sites's insight:

Obama's Honest and Compassionate Speech - About Being "A little bit more forgiving"

Obama's Honest and Compassionate Speech - About Being "A little bit more forgiving" | Community Village Daily | Scoop.it

By JESSE J. HOLLAND, THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Barack Obama on Thursday launched his "My Brother's Keeper" initiative, urging stronger efforts to create more opportunities for young minority men and to improve conditions that keep them impoverished and imprisoned in disproportionate numbers.

Obama said these young men consistently do worse in society, with odds stacked against them. "By almost every measure the group that's facing some of the most severe challenges in the 21st century in this country are boys and young men of color," Obama said, ticking off statistics on fatherhood, literacy, crime and poverty.

"We assume this is an inevitable part of American life instead of the outrage that it is," Obama said, to applause.

This is the president I elected. I love his honesty and compassion.

I hope this moves the country away from the prison industrial complex.

Now he needs to stop the drone attacks.

Last Type 1 VW Bug - 2003 | Community Village Daily | Scoop.it

Volkswagen was established in Mexico in 1954

The last type 1 VW Beetle (No. 21,529,464) rolled off the production line at Puebla, Mexico, on July 30th, 2003

A mariachi band serenaded production of the last car.

Community Village Sites's insight:

I normally don't blog about cars, but I found this tie between Germany and Mexico interesting.

I don't know when U.S. car manufacturing moved to Mexico but it's interesting how companies treat other countries with respect while people often treat other cultures with disregard and contempt.

Nation Of Islam Leader: African-Americans Need Their Own Courts

Nation Of Islam Leader: African-Americans Need Their Own Courts | Community Village Daily | Scoop.it

"Nation of Islam leader Louis Farrakhan told a crowd of 18,000 in Detroit on Sunday that African-Americans should set up their own courts after being failed by the U.S.' own justice system.

“Our people can’t take much more. We have to have our own courts. You failed us," Farrakhan said during the keynote speech of 2014's annual Nation of Islam Saviours' Day convention, according to the Detroit Free Press.

“How long must we let people stand their ground, shooting us and getting away with it while we don’t get justice?” Farrakhan told the crowd, referencing stand your ground laws in several states. “We want justice. Equal justice under the law. We want the federal government to intercede to see that black people get justice in accordance with the law. Otherwise, I’m going on record with this today … we have to have our own courts.”

Undocumented: How Immigration Became Illegal eBook: Aviva Chomsky

Explores what it means to be undocumented in a legal, social, economic and historical context

Immigrant rights activist Aviva Chomsky shows how “illegality” and “undocumentedness” are concepts that were created to exclude and exploit. With a focus on US policy, she probes how and why people, especially Mexican and Central Americans, have been assigned this status—and to what ends. Blending history with human drama, Chomsky explores what it means to be undocumented in a legal, social, economic, and historical context. She also unmasks how undocumented people live—how they work, what social services they’re eligible for, and how being undocumented affects the lives of children and families. Undocumented turns a fresh lens onto one of today’s most pressing debates.

Border Patrol's use of deadly force criticized in report

Border Patrol's use of deadly force criticized in report | Community Village Daily | Scoop.it

"Border Patrol agents have deliberately stepped in the path of cars apparently to justify shooting at the drivers and have fired in frustration at people throwing rocks from the Mexican side of the border, according to an independent review of 67 cases that resulted in 19 deaths.

The report by law enforcement experts criticized the Border Patrol for "lack of diligence" in investigating U.S. agents who had fired their weapons. It also said it was unclear whether the agency "consistently and thoroughly reviews" use-of-deadly-force incidents."

Sheriff’s Report on Migrant Killing Raises Concern About Impartiality

Sheriff’s Report on Migrant Killing Raises Concern About Impartiality | Community Village Daily | Scoop.it

"San Diego: On Tuesday, February 18 at approximately 6:40 AM, a Border Patrol agent shot and killed 41 year-old Jesus Flores-Cruz, a Mexican national, while in a rural area of San Diego County about 5 miles north of the Otay Mesa border crossing. The name of the Border Patrol agent has been withheld.

The San Diego County Sheriff’s press report on the homicide describes the person killed as the “suspect” and the person who killed him as the “victim.”

In response, Pedro Rios, the program director for the American Friends Service Committee in San Diego, issued the following statement on behalf of the Southern Border Communities Coalition (SBCC):

“We are concerned that the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department is predisposing this investigation to bias by identifying the person shot and killed as a suspect at the initial stages of the investigation. This positioning endangers the impartiality in this case and our coalition has asked the Department of Justice to intervene to ensure a thorough and impartial investigation. The Justice Department is now reviewing the incident.”

Update On Howard Morgan

Update On Howard Morgan | Community Village Daily | Scoop.it

"This is a case where the jury acquitted Morgan on counts of firing a firearm and counts of aggravated battery with a firearm, but deadlocked on charges of attempted murder.  At the retrial, the judge denied the jury knowledge of the acquitted charges, and the second jury convicted Morgan of attempted murder.  His attorneys have argued double-jeopardy because it was only possible for the jury to convict upon finding that Morgan fired a gun — a charge in which he was acquitted.

Tomorrow, February 26, 2014, a rally recognizing 9 Years of injustice against Officer Howard Morgan is being held in Chicago.

Time: 12pm – 1pm
Location: James R. Thompson Center, 100 W. Randolph, Chicago, IL
