"Columbus made Hispaniola a living hell. The Arawaks had no guns or swords, but it was not enough to simply kill those who fought against Spanish rule. The Spanish had them:

burned alive;

cut to pieces like they were animals;

run down by attack dogs and torn to pieces.

Not just the men but women and children too."

Southern Border Communities Coalition applauds grand jury probe into Anastasio Killing | Advocates head to D.C.

Southern Border Communities Coalition applauds grand jury probe into Anastasio Killing | Advocates head to D.C. | Community Village Daily | Scoop.it

"...Hernandez’ mother, Maria Luz Rojas Hernandez, pointedly asked the Justice officials what more they were waiting for, referring to the video evidence released by PBS’s Need to Know program, ” Crossing the Line at the Border” in April showing over a dozen agents surrounding her son and torturing him while he lay face down, handcuffed and hogtied on the ground. “It took seconds to kill my son, but we are still waiting after two years for a response from the government.” Her cries for justice were echoed by over 33,000 people who signed an online petition at Presente.org and by 16 members of Congress who signed a letter calling for oversight and accountability.

...

The SBCC had previously documented nine cases of unwarranted killings or serious injuries by border authorities since 2010. With the recent killing of Santillán and another person in California, that number now climbs to 11. In none of these cases has the Justice Department called a grand jury.

...

Next week SBCC representatives will travel to D.C. in advance of a new exposé of border abuse that will air on July 20th on PBS’ Need to Know. “We will call on Members of Congress to open an agency-wide investigation to address a culture of cruelty within CBP,” stated Guerrero. “How many people have to die, how many stories of torture and cruelty have to be told, before our government holds border agents accountable and controls the Border Patrol?.”

Robert Jensen: What White People Fear | Abagond

Robert Jensen: What White People Fear | Abagond | Community Village Daily | Scoop.it
The following is based mainly on Robert Jensen’s article “What White People Fear” (2010). Jensen, a professor of journalism at the University of Texas at Austin, is one of the most notable white anti-racists alive in America.

"Why is change so slow? After writing and speaking about racism for more than ten years Jensen concludes that it is fear: whites on both the right and the left are afraid of living in a world without racism.

On the right whites are afraid of losing white privilege, what some call “our way of life”. It would mean giving up wealth and power. Even poor whites, who see very little of said wealth and power, agree. Yes, they are that brainwashed by the rich, who have long used race to divide the poor against each other.

On the left it is a bit different. They talk the talk – equality blah blah diversity blah blah multiculturalism blah blah – but do not walk the walk. They say the right things but have done precious little to change anything.

At the heart of their fears is a “fragile sense of white self-importance”. Their history runs with blood: they did not get to where they are through fair play but through naked violence. Whites do not want to face up to it but at some level they all know it is true." -Abagond

"I can rest comfortably in the privileges that come with being white, or I can struggle to be fully human. But I can’t do both." -Robert Jensen

Are you a neighbor?

Are you a neighbor? | Community Village Daily | Scoop.it

“Solidarity challenges any tendency to establish a relational identity by identifying exclusively with a finite community.  If we overidentify with one community, even a particular church, we tend to become defensive about rival communities."

"instead of attempting to define which brother and sister we should be a keeper of or who our neighbor is, we should be asking ourselves if we are, if our behavior suggests that we are a brother or sister or neighbor."

Labor Department statement on withdrawal of proposed rule dealing with children who work in agricultural vocations

"WASHINGTON -- The U.S. Department of Labor today issued the following statement regarding the withdrawal of a proposed rule dealing with children who work in agricultural vocations:

"The Obama administration is firmly committed to promoting family farmers and respecting the rural way of life, especially the role that parents and other family members play in passing those traditions down through the generations. The Obama administration is also deeply committed to listening and responding to what Americans across the country have to say about proposed rules and regulations.

"As a result, the Department of Labor is announcing today the withdrawal of the proposed rule dealing with children under the age of 16 who work in agricultural vocations.

"The decision to withdraw this rule – including provisions to define the 'parental exemption' – was made in response to thousands of comments expressing concerns about the effect of the proposed rules on small family-owned farms. To be clear, this regulation will not be pursued for the duration of the Obama administration.

"Instead, the Departments of Labor and Agriculture will work with rural stakeholders – such as the American Farm Bureau Federation, the National Farmers Union, the Future Farmers of America, and 4-H – to develop an educational program to reduce accidents to young workers and promote safer agricultural working practices.""

The Death of Black Boyhood -Cassandra Jackson | Community Village Daily | Scoop.it

"In a NYtimes.com short documentary, "The Scars of Stop and Frisk," Tyquan Brehon estimates that he was stopped and frisked by New York City police over 60 times before he turned 18 years old. A report by the New York Civil Liberties Union suggests that Brehon's experience was not an anomaly. Though black males made up just 4.7 percent of the city's population, they formed 41.6 percent of stops by NYPD. According to a WNYC analysis, there were over 120,000 stops of kids between the ages of 14 and 18. Some reported being stopped as young as 12." -Cassandra Jackson

Constitutional Doesn’t Mean “Good” - @nakagawascot

Constitutional Doesn’t Mean “Good” - @nakagawascot | Community Village Daily | Scoop.it

"The Constitution is a document that was written by a group of very flawed men in order to protect their own deeply conflicted and often contradictory interests in a society that, at the time, was busily trying to wipe Native Americans off the face of the continent in order to acquire territory on which to expand a nation, the wealth of which was being created by slavery, and all while excluding women from voting and from full protection of the law."

...

"The Constitution is not race neutral. Its guarantee of equal protection is constructed around a notion of the rights of individuals that too often stands as a barrier between aggrieved groups and justice. Equal protection may provide tactical cover in moving forward a racial justice agenda, but it is not the end game. The end game involves moving beyond equal to equity, and equity was never anticipated in the “original construction and intent” of the Constitution." - @nakagawascot
