10 Conversations On Racism I’m Sick Of Having With White People | Community Village Daily | Scoop.it

The following are 10 conversations that I would be happy never to have with white peepul ever, ever, ever again. While there are countless others, these are at least 10 that I’m forced to endure far too often.

Five Things White Activists Should Never Say

Five Things White Activists Should Never Say | Community Village Daily | Scoop.it

If I’m to be a white ally, I figure I should take some of the burden off people of color to explain what’s wrong with some of the things white people say. With that in mind I’ve decided to compile a list of things that white people — specifically, white activists — should never say.

Opinion: What the deaths of two soldiers say about anti-Asian bullying – In America - CNN

Opinion: What the deaths of two soldiers say about anti-Asian bullying – In America - CNN | Community Village Daily | Scoop.it
By Jeff Yang, Special to CNN

Two young soldiers, Private Danny Chen of Manhattan, New York and Lance Corporal Harry Lew of Santa Clara, California, volunteered for military service over the objections of their families. Both ended up being posted to remote parts of Afghanistan, deep in hostile territory and largely cut off from the world. Both subsequently experienced extended campaigns of harassment at the hands of their comrades-at-arms. And last year, both, it appears, were driven to take their own lives as a result.

I Shall Not Be Conformed -Starlette McNeill

I Shall Not Be Conformed -Starlette McNeill | Community Village Daily | Scoop.it

"It’s not about race; that’s the scapegoat. This is about how we treat one another and there’s no one to blame but us.

We draw the lines and then cross them.

We provide the rations of privilege and train our children for combat.

We strategize and plan and attack each other. Crying, “peace, peace” when that’s not what we really want.

We want war because we want sides– our side of the story to be prominent, our piece of the pie to be largest."

Other People's Children

Other People's Children | Community Village Daily | Scoop.it

"Equality in education is something we, as a nation, thought we achieved in 1954 with Brown v the Board of Education. Yet as Chaltain writes, a Texas case in 1974 challenged the constitutionality of funding schools by property taxes because that process leads to unequal schools. The Supreme Court ruling decided that education wasn't a Constitutional right."

The Return of Native Americans as Immigrants

"As the immigration debate rages throughout the nation, the lingering, but unspoken, fear is that ... immigration from Mexico heralds the return of the Native American."

"To refuse entry to immigrants from across the oceans, from Europe or Asia, is one thing; to stand against the internal movements of Native American people, Americans find unsettling. They can't forget that efforts to transplant and expand European civilization in the New World have been the driving force behind the settling of the West in the 19th century and the exclusion of Native Americans from the mainstream of society in the 20th."

"Well, I'm Glad I'm White"

"Well, I'm Glad I'm White" | Community Village Daily | Scoop.it

This is why I do the work I do:

"What if this little cherub didn't have the upbringing and education to check that automatic response? How easy would it be, even subconsciously, for "I'm glad I'm white" to gradually morph into "It's better that I'm white" and eventually to "I'm better because I'm white" if there wasn't a strong message to counter that?"

"As a physician, it puts you in a real ethical dilemma," said Dr. Eric Manheimer, Bellevue's medical director, noting that a transplant would sharply reduce Angel's risk of death from complications. "The ultimate irony is it's cheaper to put in a transplant than to dialyze someone for the rest of their life." ... "Here's the paradox: he could donate, but he can't receive," Dr. Manheimer said.

A Teachable Racial Moment: On Fingers Pointed in Black Faces

A Teachable Racial Moment: On Fingers Pointed in Black Faces | Community Village Daily | Scoop.it

"...the finger point in the face is not a gesture between equals.

After she pointed her finger in President Obama’s face she followed up in a media interview by saying she “felt threatened” by him.

This flipped racial script of Governor Brewer is very old, and has several versions, but it has proven useful throughout the years for the shell game of White supremacy, as when a Black man was lynched whenever a White woman accused him of looking at her funny.

I’m not playing here mentioning the funny look. It was the unofficial law of “reckless eyeballing” created by White southerners, and many a southern Black man swung at the end of a rope for committing that supposed crime. The case of Emmitt Till was a variation of “reckless eyeballing,” because he whistled at a White woman and ended up murdered."
