San Diego Border Community Rallies to Support Jose Gutierrez

San Diego Border Community Rallies to Support Jose Gutierrez | Community Village Daily | Scoop.it
Community Village Sites's insight:

"Shena Gutierrez, the wife of Jose, released this statement on behalf of their family:

“Three years ago, our lives completely changed when Jose was handcuffed and taken from us to be deported to Mexico, a country he had not seen in over 3 decades. We did not think things could get any worse until March 30, 2011, when Jose was brutally beaten into a coma by Border Patrol agents. For 3 years we have been fighting for justice. The release of four names out of the eleven agents involved in the beating of my husband is not good enough! We want ALL names released! We want justice, accountability and transparency!”

Since the incident occurred three years ago, Shena Gutierrez has become an outspoken advocate in defense of her husband and other border families who have been affected by border brutality and abuse of power. On a few occasions, she has traveled to Washington D.C. to speak to members of Congress who have been made aware of the lack of accountability and oversight within the nation’s largest law enforcement agency.

Last June, she joined with the families of Anastasio Hernandez Rojas and Valeria Munique Tachiquin in a video asking their Senator to equip Border Patrol with body worn-cameras, which CBP has committed to, but has not yet implemented.  Last week, the request was once again raised, this time to Department of Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson.

Migration is Beautiful

Migration is Beautiful | Community Village Daily | Scoop.it

"Artist and co-founder of CultureStrike, Favianna Rodriguez, created the “Migration is Beautiful” butterfly image. “The butterfly symbol was not my idea. Immigrant rights activists have seen the butterfly as a symbol of fluid and peaceful migration for generations. To me, the monarch butterfly represents the dignity and resilience of migrants, and the right that all living beings have to move freely. I believe that we shouldn’t allow our identity to be defined only by our suffering, nor by the actions that others have taken to devalue our families and our labor — rather, let us celebrate our beauty, pride, and resilience in the face of inequality and injustice.”

Gambian Mother Siabatou Sanneh Walks Paris Marathon with 40-lb. Water Container on Head to Bring Awareness to Need for Clean Drinking Water in Africa

Gambian Mother Siabatou Sanneh Walks Paris Marathon with 40-lb. Water Container on Head to Bring Awareness to Need for Clean Drinking Water in Africa | Community Village Daily | Scoop.it

In the middle of 54,000 runners at last week’s Paris Marathon, Siabatou Sannehstood out. Carrying a 40-pound (20kg) water container on her head and wearing her race number 64173 on top of a multi-colored traditional dress, Siabatou wanted to make a statement.

It was the first time the mother of four had ever left her country, Gambia, but this didn’t deter her from wanting to raise awareness about the difficulties African women face in accessing clean drinking water. Siabatou was there on the behalf of Water for Africa, a non-profit which builds boreholes in her village.

“I came to Paris to do the marathon to raise awareness and help the African women get clean water for their domestic use – for drinking, cooking, washing and gardening to grow agriculture,” the 43-year-old told IBTimes UK, speaking through a translator.

Video: New documentary explores how epic film GIANT changed the lives of film's Latinos | Latina Lista | Community Village Daily | Scoop.it

"LatinaLista — Any real movie buff who considers herself an expert in film knows the cinematic masterpiece GIANT. Filmed in 1955, 60 miles from the Mexican border in a small West Texas town called Marfa, GIANT starred some of the biggest stars of the time — Elizabeth Taylor, Rock Hudson and James Dean, to name a few.

The story was an epic tale of a wealthy Texas rancher, his wife, their descendants and their life together over 25 years in a part of the country where racism against Mexican Americans reigned as supreme as the iconic cowboy. To its credit, the film was among the first to openly tackle the issue of racism."

Peacemakers

Peacemakers | Community Village Daily | Scoop.it

By Starlette McNeill

"We make lots of things but I am not sure that peace is at the top of the list.  Our hands are busy, holding and letting go, moving and directing, pointing and shooting, typing, writing and erasing, shaping and shining, soothing and punishing.  We make things happen and we make things work.  We make things better and we make things worse.

But, how do we make peace?  What are the ingredients for peace?  The Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. said, “I refuse to accept the view that mankind is so tragically bound to the starless midnight of racism and war that the bright daybreak of peace and brotherhood can never become a reality… I believe that unarmed truth and unconditional love will have the final word.”  Is that it?  Are unarmed truth and unconditional love ingredients for peace?  I believe so. But, I would add integrity and wisdom, courage and persistence, faith and forgiveness, justice and reconciliation, hope and patience, grace and mercy."

200 Years of U.S. Immigration, in 1 Colorful Infographic

200 Years of U.S. Immigration, in 1 Colorful Infographic | Community Village Daily | Scoop.it

By Tanvi Misra

In 1819, Congress passed a law requiring that the arrival of all immigrants be recorded. Immigrant workers were needed, and the rest of the 19th century saw their numbers grow. From that period through today, America has seen waves of immigration, which Natalia Bronshtein has captured in a colorful interactive graphic.

A Ferguson Youth Led Summit (Ferguson Conversations)

"Local student leaders from the Ferguson Youth Initiative came up with the idea to hold a summit to talk about how to make change in the aftermath of the tragedy their community has experienced. In late September, young people gathered at Florissant Valley Community College just miles from where Michael Brown was shot. Joined by community members and educators, the group talked about how the relationship between youth and the police of Ferguson needs to change, and what activities are needed in their town."

Community Village Sites's insight:

A border activist said "You are either a worker or a guest. You don't have a guest in your house, then ask them to wash your dishes."

During enslavement the workers were taken care of, although only like property, and only when not being beaten and raped.

Now that enslavement is over by law, the U.S. doesn't want agricultural workers to even have citizenship.
