Migration is Beautiful

Migration is Beautiful | Community Village Daily | Scoop.it

"Artist and co-founder of CultureStrike, Favianna Rodriguez, created the “Migration is Beautiful” butterfly image. “The butterfly symbol was not my idea. Immigrant rights activists have seen the butterfly as a symbol of fluid and peaceful migration for generations. To me, the monarch butterfly represents the dignity and resilience of migrants, and the right that all living beings have to move freely. I believe that we shouldn’t allow our identity to be defined only by our suffering, nor by the actions that others have taken to devalue our families and our labor — rather, let us celebrate our beauty, pride, and resilience in the face of inequality and injustice.”

Not an Introvert, Not an Extrovert? You May Be An Ambivert

Not an Introvert, Not an Extrovert? You May Be An Ambivert | Community Village Daily | Scoop.it
Ambiverts have introverted and extroverted traits, but neither trait is dominant. As a result, they have more balanced, or nuanced, personalities. They aren’t the folks yammering your ear off. Nor are they the totally silent ones happily ensconced in the corner.

Ambiverts move between being social or being solitary, speaking up or listening carefully with greater ease than either extroverts or introverts. “It is like they’re bilingual,” says Daniel Pink, a business book author and co-host of Crowd Control, a TV series on human behavior, who has studied ambiversion. “They have a wider range of skills and can connect with a wider range of people in the same way someone who speaks English and Spanish can.”

Failing White Kids

Failing White Kids | Community Village Daily | Scoop.it

By Jennifer Harvey

Excerpts by Glenn Robinson

In the mid-1990s Mary Bucholtz spent hours in conversation with students at a racially diverse high school in northern California. During her interviews, she asked each student a seemingly straightforward question. She asked them “for the record” to identify themselves according to their age, sex/gender, grade and race/ethnicity.

One of her persistent experiences blew my mind.

Almost every white student could not or would not answer Bucholtz’s question in a straightforward way. On everything else they did fine. But when it came to race/ethnicity, their responses ranged from the ironic (exemplified by a student who said, “I’m the whiteness of the white boys” in a fake British accent; responses Buchold characterizes as mock-celebrations of “affiliation with whiteness”), to those “feigning ignorance” (respondents qualifying “I’m white” with phrases like “I guess,” or “I don’t know” or odd elaborations like “From, uh, outward signs”).

...

how problematic “white” is in a racially supremacist society

...

if one names one’s white identity without demonstrating a reluctance about that identity one risks being perceived as somehow endorsing racism

...

white racial identity and white supremacy are so bound up with each other in the U.S. that these young people get silly, snarky or tongue-tied because–forced to own “white”–they are trying desperately to create a gap between these two things.

Brad Pitt plays the Pikey stereotype in the movie Snatch

Pikey is a slang term, which may be pejorative when so intended, used mainly in England, Scotland, Ireland and Wales to refer to people who are of the Traveller Community, a lower-class person, regarded as coarse or disreputable. -Wikipedia

"Tommy (Stephen Graham) arrives at the Pikey campsite, where Mickey (Brad Pitt) and ... Brad Pitt, he nailed the pikey accentand mannerisms!"

A piker in Australia and New Zealand is someone who refuses to do something within a group. It is not well received among Irish Travellers or Romas, as it is considered an ethnic slur. -Wikipedia

Dallas immigrant advocate to take post at U.S. enforcement agency

Dallas immigrant advocate to take post at U.S. enforcement agency | Community Village Daily | Scoop.it
A Dallas immigration lawyer known for vigorous defense of immigrants will become a senior advisor to the nation’s top cop on immigration enforcement.

Mary Elizabeth Cedillo-Pereira, 44, will join the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency, which is headed by former U.S. Attorney in Dallas Sarah Saldaña.

Cedillo-Pereira, a Dallas native, is well-known in the immigration bar for championing initiatives aimed at young immigrants who call themselves “dreamers” and educating families about the 2012 program that now defers certain deportations for those brought here as children.

The state of Texas leads litigation suing the federal government over 2014 expansion of the program–yet-another example of the conflictive view many in the U.S. take toward illegal immigration.

Cedillo-Pereira is a 1999 graduate of Southern Methodist University School of Law. Saldaña also graduated from SMU law school, in 1984 and served as U.S. attorney for the northern district of Texas based in Dallas. Both are daughters of construction workers.

cultural appropriation

cultural appropriation | Community Village Daily | Scoop.it

Cultural appropriation is when you take something from another culture over the objections of that culture. It is cultural theft. It is especially common when racists borrow “cool stuff” from cultures whose people they look down on.

It is that thing where if Black people do something
, like twerking or wearing cornrows, it is looked down on as “ghetto” or “hood” or “unprofessional”, but when White people do the very same thing, it is suddenly admired as “cool” or “edgy” or “epic”.
