Migration is Beautiful

Migration is Beautiful | Community Village Daily | Scoop.it

"Artist and co-founder of CultureStrike, Favianna Rodriguez, created the “Migration is Beautiful” butterfly image. “The butterfly symbol was not my idea. Immigrant rights activists have seen the butterfly as a symbol of fluid and peaceful migration for generations. To me, the monarch butterfly represents the dignity and resilience of migrants, and the right that all living beings have to move freely. I believe that we shouldn’t allow our identity to be defined only by our suffering, nor by the actions that others have taken to devalue our families and our labor — rather, let us celebrate our beauty, pride, and resilience in the face of inequality and injustice.”

Brothers McCollum 51, Brown 47, Finally Compensated after 30 years wrongfully incarcerated | Community Village Daily | Scoop.it

Henry McCollum sits stunned as applause rings out in a Robeson County courtroom in Lumberton, N.C. Tuesday, September 2, 2014, after a judge has declared McCollum and his brother Leon Brown innocent of a brutal rape murder for which they have spent 30 years in prison. Behind him is Beverly Lake, Jr., founder of the Innocence Commission, who was vital in the process to free the men. Photo: Chuck Liddy/Raleigh News & Observer/MCT via Getty Images

I have long liked how Ebony magazine capitalized the word “Black” when applied to Black people. But on points of English I mostly follow the Oxford dictionary.

The rise and fall of the Black Panther Party during the 1960s and beyond is a uniquely American story of a growing pride in black culture, and more militant demands for justice and racial equality, with a cast of larger-than-life personalities including: Huey Newton, Bobby Seale, Eldridge and Kathleen Cleaver, and Fred Hampton. Renowned documentarian Stanley Nelson masterfully assembles rare archival footage that contextualizes the history of the Panthers – begun in response to racism and police brutality. THE BLACK PANTHERS does not hesitate to critique its subject, nor does it shy away from judging the corrupt activities of J. Edgar Hoover’s FBI or the countless shoot-outs, raids and arrests that were the response of local police. It is a history that needs to be told to understand today’s incendiary racial landscape.

Janelle Monae & Wondaland in SF perform Hell You Talmbout #SayHerName #SayHisName

Janelle Monae and the Wondaland crew joined local #BlackLivesMatter, #BlackTransLivesMatter peeps and families of Bay Area people killed by police at the 24th and Mission BART plaza. It was powerful to hear names from the mouths of family members and cool to see what these folks are doing to combat police brutality. Good turn out and 2 hours of stories and performances led to this.

Three Americans, British man overpower train gunman

Three Americans, British man overpower train gunman | Community Village Daily | Scoop.it
Three Americans and a British man overpowered a gunman on a high-speed train traveling from Amsterdam to Paris, possibly averting a massacre, officials said.
Community Village Sites's insight:

Disarming the gunman is exactly what I was trained how to do by my co-worker Basim who is ex-military and ex-police. I explained how to disarm the gunman to my family, then my daughter had a dream about a gunman entering her school. She told her classmates in the dream, "Don't worry, I got this."

New pedestrian crossing unveiled in Tijuana

New pedestrian crossing unveiled in Tijuana | Community Village Daily | Scoop.it

TIJUANA — A new entrance to Mexico for pedestrians opened Wednesday at San Ysidro — a modern, three-story facility that authorities say will transform the experience of entering Mexico for some 22,000 southbound border crossers each day.

The $6.9 million structure, Puerta Este Mexico-San Ysidro, represents a new way of doing business at the border for Mexico, as the federal government seeks control of who comes into the country. With the new facilities, immigration officials are preparing to step up enforcement of a rule stipulating that foreigners present passports when entering Mexico, and requiring that those on business or who plan to stay for more than a week pay a 330-peso fee, about $21.

The new facility answers a need to “offer adequate, modern, comfortable, efficient, rapid and friendly service,” said Luis Videgaray, Mexico’s secretary of finance and public credit, one of a number of high-ranking U.S. and Mexican officials attending the Wednesday inauguration.

Authorities said that the building will be a model that can be replicated at other crossings as Mexico upgrades its border infrastructure. For the first time, foreigners will be processed in separate lines from Mexican nationals.

White fragility

White fragility | Community Village Daily | Scoop.it

White fragility (1970s- ) is that thing where White Americans get highly upset when you try to talk to them about racism, particularly their own racism. It can lead to discomfort, anger, guilt, fear, sometimes even violence or murder. Instead of listening and learning, they defend their self-image. It is a part of colour-blind racism. It leads to tropes like the R-word, White feelings, White fauxpologies, derailing and the tone argument.

The term comes from Robin DiAngelo, a professor of multicultural education at Westfield State University. She has a PhD in race relations and White racial identity. Since the 1990s she has been doing diversity training, coming across White fragility all the time. She uses the idea of White fragility to help fellow Whites understand what it is they are doing wrong and why.

Microaggressions: What’s Inside You – Will Come Out

Microaggressions: What’s Inside You – Will Come Out | Community Village Daily | Scoop.it

By Cherrye S. Vasquez, Ph.D.

I distinctively recall a very casual conversation I had with a co-worker one day. As she stood before me expressing her disgust and frustration due to her daughter’s latest inauspicious actions, without thinking, I announced, “How trifling!” No sooner I said those words; I wished I could stuff them back down my throat. Later, I asked myself, How could I? - See more at: http://cherryevasquez.tateauthor.com/microagressions-whats-inside-you-will-come-out/#sthash.z7rUqarZ.dpuf

Obama plan leaves child migrants adrift

Obama plan leaves child migrants adrift | Community Village Daily | Scoop.it

By David Rogers

One year later, child migrants from Central America are still paying a heavy price for President Barack Obama’s decision last summer to rush them into deportation proceedings without first taking steps to provide legal counsel.

New government data this week offer a first, full-year tally for the immigration courts, and the numbers show that among the 13,451 cases completed since July 18, 2014, barely half the children had legal representation.

The picture has improved over time, but in 38 percent of the cases completed since last Christmas, the child was still without counsel. Even since mid-April, there have been an average of 100 case completions per week in which there is no record of a defense attorney.

At one level, this picture is skewed by the stubbornly high level of deportation orders issued by judges “in absentia,” when the child defendant does not appear in court. But migrant rights attorneys argue that this is a Catch-22 situation: Without access to counsel, more children stay away and have no realistic chance of appeal.
