Cultural Loss - Impact on Native American Health | Unnatural Causes | Documentary | Community Village Daily | Scoop.it

"Dr. Donald Warne talks about how cultural loss impacts the health of Native American tribes in Arizona. The damming of rivers plunged local tribes into poverty, dependence and ultimately poor health. Deprived of their language, land, livelihood and traditions, many Native Americans have developed a fatalistic view about diseases like diabetes.”

L.A. Immigration Attorney Who Won Landmark Case Subject Of New Biopic

L.A. Immigration Attorney Who Won Landmark Case Subject Of New Biopic | Community Village Daily | Scoop.it

Judy Wood was a single mother in her mid-30s who moved to L.A. and committed herself to immigration law, particularly asylum cases. A deeply spiritual woman, she actually started practicing immigration law after a vision she had of helping others who were suffering and in need. In one of her first cases, she represented an Afghani immigrant who had been persecuted for opening up a school for girls in her home country. Wood fought a tenacious battle in and out of court against established law and the case culminated in arguing before the United States Court of Appeals for the 9th Circuit. By winning the case, Wood single-handedly changed the law of asylum nationwide, allowing women to be designated a protected class — saving the lives of not only her client, but thousands of other female refugees who would have been sent back to their home countries where they faced certain death.

U.S. Undermining Due Process Protections for Asylum Seekers

U.S. Undermining Due Process Protections for Asylum Seekers | Community Village Daily | Scoop.it
Even before the recent ICE raids on Central American families began last week, there were serious signs that the government was undermining due process and not providing asylum-seekers a meaningful opportunity to make their cases. Many of the violations were brought to the attention of the immigration agencies by the CARA Project and Human Rights First, through a formal letter to the Directors of USCIS and ICE, which called upon the Department of Homeland Security to halt the egregious due process violations taking place inside family detention centers in Texas and Pennsylvania.

Silicon Valley’s Indian Community Pushes to Reform H1B Visa Program

Silicon Valley’s Indian Community Pushes to Reform H1B Visa Program | Community Village Daily | Scoop.it

The H1B visa is such a big deal for the Indian expatriate community in Silicon Valley that immigration lawyer Madhuri Nemali has been able to build her business around it. Nemali says over half of her clients are Indian nationals struggling with some aspect of the visa program.

The H1B is a temporary work permit that’s intended for those with highly specialized skills, like computer engineering. Workers from India receive far more H1Bs than people from any other country — some years, nearly 10 times as many as workers from China, who are second on the list.

Hundreds of thousands of Indian expats hold H1B visas. Many live in Silicon Valley, and many feel the H1B program has major problems no one is addressing.

Nemali says clients come to her office in San Jose with all kinds of H1B issues. Many have trouble getting one. Some who hold the visa are being taken advantage of by their employers. Others have put down roots but now can’t get a green card, which is proof of permanent residency. The H1B visa affects the whole Indian community, Nemali says.

Stanford Study: 'Culturally Relevant' Teaching Boosts GPA, Attendance for At-Risk Youth, So Why Not Make It Universal? | Community Village Daily | Scoop.it
If you don’t know about your past, you lack a blueprint for the future.  And a new study suggests just that.  Research in California found that high school students who were exposed to classes on race and ethnicity experienced better attendance and academic achievement. The study, which was conducted by researchers at Stanford University, revealed …

How Race Is Made in America: Immigration, Citizenship, and the Historical Power of Racial Scripts

How Race Is Made in America examines Mexican Americans—from 1924, when American law drastically reduced immigration into the United States, to 1965, when many quotas were abolished—to understand how broad themes of race and citizenship are constructed. These years shaped the emergence of what Natalia Molina describes as an immigration regime, which defined the racial categories that continue to influence perceptions in the United States about Mexican Americans, race, and ethnicity.

Molina demonstrates that despite the multiplicity of influences that help shape our concept of race, common themes prevail. Examining legal, political, social, and cultural sources related to immigration, she advances the theory that our understanding of race is socially constructed in relational ways—that is, in correspondence to other groups. Molina introduces and explains her central theory, racial scripts, which highlights the ways in which the lives of racialized groups are linked across time and space and thereby affect one another. How Race Is Made in America also shows that these racial scripts are easily adopted and adapted to apply to different racial groups.

Do Not Send Us Bottles of Water. Instead, Join Us in a Revolt

Do Not Send Us Bottles of Water. Instead, Join Us in a Revolt | Community Village Daily | Scoop.it
  1. Demand the removal and arrest of Rick Snyder, the Governor of Michigan.
  2. Make the State of Michigan pay for the disaster that the State of Michigan created.
  3. The federal government must then be placed in charge.
  4. Evacuate any and all Flint residents who want to leave now.
  5. For those who choose to stay in Flint, FEMA must create a temporary water system in each home.

If you want to help Flint, sign the petition, demand that the federal government take action, and then get involved yourself, wherever you live, so that this doesn't happen to you -- and so that the people we elect know they can no longer break the law as they rule by fiat or indifference. We deserve much better than this.

For a better world,

Michael Moore

Court: Class Action Over Abusive Conditions in Tucson Detention Center Can Move Forward

Court: Class Action Over Abusive Conditions in Tucson Detention Center Can Move Forward | Community Village Daily | Scoop.it
A federal court in Tucson, Arizona held that U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) must answer allegations of horrific conditions experienced by individuals in Tucson Sector detention facilities (a.k.a. “hieleras”) along the southern border. In decisions handed down on January 11, the court decided that the case, Doe V. Johnson, may proceed as a class action (i.e., the court “certified” the class) and rejected the government’s motion to dismiss. CBP had strenuously urged the court to dismiss the case even before plaintiffs had the chance to prove their claims.
