Illegal Migrants - The Lovings

Illegal Migrants - The Lovings | Community Village Daily | Scoop.it

"Richard Loving, a white man, married Mildred Jeter, a black and American Indian woman, in Washington in 1958. Interracial marriage was legal in Washington, but it was illegal for Virginia residents to go there for the express purpose of interracial marriage. Six weeks after they got married and came home, then-Caroline Sheriff Garnett Brooks kicked down their door at 4 a.m. and threw the newlyweds in jail.

Their refusal to get divorced earned them a ticket out of the state. They lived in exile in Washington for a few years and longed for their country home in Central Point in southeastern Caroline. They eventually violated the law and moved back to Virginia."

Migration is Beautiful

Migration is Beautiful | Community Village Daily | Scoop.it

"Artist and co-founder of CultureStrike, Favianna Rodriguez, created the “Migration is Beautiful” butterfly image. “The butterfly symbol was not my idea. Immigrant rights activists have seen the butterfly as a symbol of fluid and peaceful migration for generations. To me, the monarch butterfly represents the dignity and resilience of migrants, and the right that all living beings have to move freely. I believe that we shouldn’t allow our identity to be defined only by our suffering, nor by the actions that others have taken to devalue our families and our labor — rather, let us celebrate our beauty, pride, and resilience in the face of inequality and injustice.”

Human Beans - Kickstarter campaign

Human Beans - Kickstarter campaign | Community Village Daily | Scoop.it

I am re-blogging this Human Beans article for a blogger friend, Tracy Jackson.

Human Beans are an interesting idea that goes beyond simple M&M's that all taste the same even though they are colored differently.

These jelly beans are flavored differently than what you would expect by their color.

These can be used to stimulate dialog toward racial justice in the way that Lee Mun Wah's "What Stands Between Us: Racism Conversation Flash Cards" are used.

4 Days of Imagery - Project 562

4 Days of Imagery - Project 562 | Community Village Daily | Scoop.it

“On January 19th I had a stroke. I was totally paralyzed on my left side. I was in the hospital for about three months. And then I was in rehab for thirty five days and when I came home I had to go to physical therapy. I just finished in August. I had to go to Billings for speech therapy to learn how to talk good again. My hands are only at 75%. They told me not to do any sewing, but I started sewing again anyway… But it was through prayer. Prayer is what brought me back to where I am now. And Crystal [pictured left]. She said, ‘Grandma, I’m going to move in with you, I’m going to take care of you.’ And I said, ‘Well, you’ll have to pray with me.’ And she said, ‘I will.’ And she really encouraged me. We’d walk a mile everyday. If it wasn’t for her and my strong belief, I think I would have given up a long time ago.”

We at NDLON believe the music is a transformative and powerful tool that brings healing while fighting for social justice.  It is a vehicle by which we raise our voices, express our humanity, and transform our communities.

These musical events, or serenatas we call Chant Down the Walls, bring our community together in song to remind workers, parents, and youth inside the immigration prison that they are not forgotten and that we will continue to fight the current administration's deportation policies. These events also serve to hold lawmakers accountable to their promises to bring justice for immigrants.

No More Deaths volunteers meet desperate Central Americans | Community Village Daily | Scoop.it

Jordan Weiner met the Central Americans as they arrived exhausted with blistered feet at a shelter in Tenosique in southern Mexico. Lois Martin traveled to Honduras in 2012 and 2013 and learned why ordinary citizens feared for their lives.

These No More Deaths volunteers shed some light on why so many people risk a treacherous journey for the slim chance of asylum in the United States.

The Ohlone people were forced out of San Francisco. Now they want part of their land back.

The Ohlone people were forced out of San Francisco. Now they want part of their land back. | Community Village Daily | Scoop.it

There are only three ways to get land," said Tony Cerda, chairman of the Costanoan Rumsen Carmel Tribe, in 2010. "You can buy it, have it given to you, or steal it." It's clear which one of those applies to his people, the Ohlone, who lived in the central California coastal region for thousands of years prior to the arrival of Spanish missionaries in the 1700s. The Ohlone once numbered as many as 15,000 on lands stretching from the San Francisco Bay to Big Sur. But following years of enslavement under the Spanish mission system and, later, persecution by settlers, they are now largely a people in exile.

Cerda's tribe—about 2,000 people living in the Pomona area east of Los Angeles—are now the largest contemporary Ohlone group in the state. They're leading the push for cultural recognition in the city of San Francisco. Specifically, they're asking the city for land to build a cultural center as part of a proposed shoreline redevelopment project in the Hunters Point Shipyard area. The area was once the location of a historic Ohlone village and burial site—one of over 425 in the San Francisco Bay region.

Executive Action on Immigration: Good, Bad, and Ugly

I went to bed last night mentally doing a checklist of everyone I know who qualifies and does not qualify under the President’s immigration action. As a community advocate and formerly undocumented immigrant, the word that most aptly describes last night is “bitter-sweet.”

While the announcement is not enough, we do need to celebrate our victories, and what change this temporary reprieve will bring to so many members of the community. However, I am also frankly terrified for those that it would not help, and what would happen in the absence of permanent changes.

I am making a quick reference checklist here for myself, family members and friends, similar to the one I made for the Senate immigration bill two years ago as a community advocate. These are simply my initial mental impressions of the various memos released by the DHS yesterday and available here. They are in no particular order:

A is for Activist - Kindle edition by Innosanto Nagara

A is for Activist is an ABC board book written and illustrated for the next generation of progressives: families who want their kids to grow up in a space that is unapologetic about activism, environmental justice, civil rights, LGBTQ rights, and everything else that activists believe in and fight for. The alliteration, rhyming, and vibrant illustrations make the book exciting for children, while the issues it brings up resonate with their parents' values of community, equality, and justice. This engaging little book carries huge messages as it inspires hope for the future, and calls children to action while teaching them a love for books.

Critical Ethnic Studies MA Degree - DePaul University

Critical Ethnic Studies MA Degree - DePaul University | Community Village Daily | Scoop.it

DePaul University's College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences is pleased to offer the first graduate program in a new and exciting field that utilizes Chicago as a living classroom.

The Master of Arts in Critical Ethnic Studies prepares students for advanced analysis of race and ethnicity in an urban and global context. It provides an interdisciplinary approach to the studies of systematic marginalization of racialized minorities. It also looks at how racialized groups respond to and counter these forces through art, culture, political organization and other forms of social citizenship.
We emphasize social justice and transformation while focusing on U.S. ethno-racial populations through an intersectional, transnational, and urban framework. Students apply critical theories to complex social and cultural issues. The program consists of a combination of core courses and electives and a final project or internship.

Almost All Aliens: Immigration, Race and Colonialism in American History and Identity

Almost All Aliens: Immigration, Race and Colonialism in American History and Identity | Community Village Daily | Scoop.it

Book Description from Amazon:

"Almost All Aliens offers a unique reinterpretation of immigration in the history of the United States. Leaving behind the traditional melting-pot model of immigrant assimilation, Paul Spickard puts forward a fresh and provocative reconceptualization that embraces the multicultural reality of immigration that has always existed in the United States. His astute study illustrates the complex relationship between ethnic identity and race, slavery, and colonial expansion. Examining not only the lives of those who crossed the Atlantic, but also those who crossed the Pacific, the Caribbean, and the North American Borderlands, Almost All Aliens provides a distinct, inclusive analysis of immigration and identity in the United States from 1600 until the present."
