Use of rescue towers increasing to save (im)migrants lost in desert

Use of rescue towers increasing to save (im)migrants lost in desert | Community Village Daily | Scoop.it

Tucson, Arizona, Oct 23 (EFEUSA).- The so-called rescue towers placed by the U.S. Border Patrol along the Arizona border may often mean the difference between life and death for migrants lost or abandoned in the desert without water or food.

"When people are in danger, whether it be from dehydration or they need medical help, they can see these towers and press the button that starts a rescue (operation)," the head of the Border Patrol's Tucson Sector, Manuel Padilla, told Efe on Thursday.

...

Border Patrol agents said that meticulous studies and tests were done prior to setting up the towers, like for example determining how long two gallons of water would sustain an immigrant crossing the border, and with that information the sites for the towers were selected.

...

"What we did recently was to modify these towers, placing a blue light on top of the tower and that light can be seen from 10 miles away," said Padilla.

...

The BORSTAR rescue team made 459 migrant rescues up through August of this year, many of them after one of the towers was activated.
