A Picture of Democracy: How digital cameras and smartphones might reduce corruption in Afghanistan and elsewhere | Slate | Community Media | Scoop.it

A study just released by Michael Callen and James Long, a pair of ambitious doctoral students at the University of California-San Diego, exemplifies these efforts. The two researchers evaluated whether low-end digital cameras could be a cheap and easy technological fix for election fraud in Afghanistan’s 2010 parliamentary elections. Their results are promising.

Wikipedia Isn't Journalism, But Are Wikipedians Reluctant Journalists? | PBS MediaShift Idea Lab | Community Media | Scoop.it

Wikipedia articles on breaking news stories dominate page views on the world's sixth-largest website. Perhaps more importantly, these articles drive the most significant editor contribution -- especially among new editors. In the first three months of this year, English Wikipedia articles with the most contributors were the 2011 Tucson shooting, the 2011 Egyptian revolution and the 2011 Tōhoku earthquake and tsunami articles with 460, 405 and 785 editors contributing to the growth of the article respectively.

Interestingly, a number of Wikipedia policies discourage writing articles on breaking news. One of Wikipedia's 42 policies, titled "What Wikipedia is not" (or WP:NOT), highlights that the site is, above all, an encyclopedia, not a newspaper (Wikipedia:NotNewspaper).

Broadcast radio remains vital tool in Indian County to maintain culture, distribute local news | Aberdeen News | Community Media | Scoop.it

Out of the 14,600 total stations licensed by the commission as of the end of 2010, only 48 are held by tribes. In an effort to help tribes preserve language and culture, and to promote self-governance, the FCC established a priority last year for radio applications filed by federally recognized tribes or an entity that is majority-owned by a tribe and proposes to cover at least 50 percent tribal land. A proposed expansion would cover tribes that don't have reservations.

More vital than a water main | Rex Smith, editor, Times Union | Community Media | Scoop.it

Yet here's what we have that some people in the city don't: Fast broadband Internet service. Actually, I don't care if the house is never hooked into the water main that runs down the big road a quarter-mile away, nor the more distant sewer system. But my fast Internet connection? Don't touch it. I need it.

Petitioned by PACTV, Gov. Deval Patrick Proclaims Freedom of Speech Week | Wicked Local Kingston | Community Media | Scoop.it

In Massachusetts, PACTV has taken Free Speech Week to a new level. This year, the organization petitioned Gov. Deval Patrick to recognize the event statewide, and Patrick signed a proclamation Oct. 12 designating the third week of October as Freedom of Speech Week in Massachusetts. Senate President Therese Murray, D-Plymouth, state Rep. Tom Calter, D-Kingston, and state Rep. Vinny deMacedo, R-Plymouth, presented the governor’s proclamation to PACTV Executive Director Nancy Richard, longtime volunteer Chris Querze and PACTV Board President Tamson Burgess Monday. Full disclosure: Burgess is a senior editor with GateHouse Media New England and is the editor of the Old Colony Memorial and wickedlocalplymouth.com.

Further disclosure: I am a proud card-carrying member of PACTV. Why? It’s really quite simple. From PACTV’s statement on the proclamation: “PACTV is a not-for-profit membership-based organization that provides a public forum for Duxbury, Kingston and Plymouth through public, educational and government access television. PACTV provides media training, modern production facilities and cable channel access to promote media literacy so residents of the communities it serves may exercise their First Amendment right to free speech.

As long as you’re out there, OWS, why not throw corporate media into the mix? As soon as you’re done with Wells Fargo and Bank of America, why not head over to General Electric, Walt Disney, News Corp., Time Warner, Viacom, CBS, or Sinclair Broadcasting? Occupy DSM, why not spend a day at WHO Radio, owned by Clear Channel, the largest owner of radio stations in the United States (894) and offering everyone in central Iowa an all-day-every-day schedule of corporate right-wing-speak whether anyone likes it or not.

Charlottesville Public Access fights decreased funds with more original content | c-ville | Community Media | Scoop.it

Cal Tate, the general manager of Charlottesville Public Access Television, was once shown a room full of discarded satellite dishes by a Comcast technician. Comcast, the largest cable operator in the nation, had just acquired Adelphia Cable Communications, and when satellite subscribers made the switch to cable, they would often ask Comcast technicians to get rid of their old equipment. For Tate, this memory is a point of vocational pride: The more cable subscribers there are in the City, the healthier his CPA-TV budget.
