The Door Youth Centre | Ottawa

The Door Youth Centre | Ottawa | Community Makerspace - The Door Youth Centre (755 Somerset St. W.) | Scoop.it

Our vision for The Door is one of a welcoming place where young people aged 12-18 acquire the knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors to become independent adults capable of realizing their full potential and participating actively in their communities. Our mission is to provide integrated social and developmental activities to youth members within an accessible, safe, and supportive environment.

The Door is the only youth centre in the Somerset West area, thus fulfilling a need that is otherwise unmet. The youth come from a variety of backgrounds: some come from a stable home environment and are just looking for a place to hang out with friends. Others are among the high risk youth with no other place to go.

The Tools | Desktop 3D Printer

We are seeking benefactors to support the purchase of a reasonably-priced desktop 3D printer for use by The Door Youth Centre.  The 3D printer will be the centrepiece of a program of workshops designed to introduce young people to the world of digital fabrication and the joy of "making".

Here is the breakdown of our costs:

- $1,400 for the purchase of the 3D printer (includes shipping & handling, accessories)
- $200 for consumables (plastic filament)
- $100 to help reimburse out-of-pocket expenses of volunteers

A message from our benefactor:

"3D printing is more than a 21st century technological tool.  It is an instrument that can unleash the creative potential of youth at the same time as connecting them to a global community of individuals who share the wonder and joy of making things.  I am proud to support The Door Youth Centre in the purchase of a 3D printer and excited to see imagination put to work."

A message from our benefactor:

"It's clear to me that if we are serious about driving local innovation we need to empower people by providing them access to advanced tools like 3D printers.  It's especially appealing to me that a youth program like The Door would have the vision and will to make this a reality for young people in their community.  Congratulations Malik!"
