One of the most direct ways to increase access to fresh, healthy produce is to grow it yourself. Many urban areas promote and support community gardens or home gardens. Gardeners and garden organizations should contact their local extension office for location specific information on gardening practices and crops.

Urban gardeners must be attentive to soil contamination issues - in fact, some municipalities mandate that soil be brought in for raised bed gardening to assure that there is not soil contamination.

Here are some other resources for community gardeners:

American Community Gardening Association, Starting a Community Garden: The American Community Gardening Association provides a wealth of resources on how to start and maintain a community garden. Check out their extensive resource collection on their learn page.

http://communitygarden.org/learn/starting-a-community-garden.php

Kitchen Gardeners International: This non-profit organization helps people grow their own food, wherever they live. Instructions for starting a kitchen garden can be found on their Education page.

http://kgi.org/how-to-grow-a-kitchen-garden

University of Wisconsin Fresh Vegetable Series: Four page brochures that offer practical tips for buying, storing and cooking different vegetables.

University of Wisconsin Cooperative Extension resources for Urban and Community Gardens: The University of Wisconsin-Extension Learning Store carries downloadable resources on community gardens, composting, and issues of soil contamination.

http://learningstore.uwex.edu/Urban-Community-Gardens-C371.aspx

Got Dirt? Gardening Initiative: The Wisconsin Department of Health Services’ Nutrition and Physical Activity program developed “Got Dirt?” - a toolkit that provides step-by-step plans for starting a garden. While written for Wisconsin, the toolkit is useful for community and school gardens throughout the country.

Policy Link: Policy link’s Growing Urban Agriculture focus area  provides many tools to improve healthy food access, including their “Urban Ag Toolkit.”
