So often we limit ourselves by seeing PLN's as something made - contained and organised - rather than something continually evolving, changing growing and adapting. (RT @mrkrndvs: 'PLN, a Verb or a Noun?

I'd go with a verb for the term PLN - it means then that it's ever-changing and ever-evolving and being constructed by the participants as a learning community.  It's an active community constructing their own learning, examing their practice in depth and then evolving that practice.

iTunesU, MIT's Opencourseware, OpenLearn, and MOOCs are early prototypes, but content quality in the future will be greatly improved in terms of pedagogical and media design to accommodate online learners.

Interesting to think about where we are headed in terms of 'effective' professional learning and Communities of Practice.  The days of the 'one-day-course' are gone if we want to have professional learning that is motivating, engaging and, most importantly, sustainable in creating a change in teaching practice.
