What's Your Feedback Loop?

The work of companies like Yelp and Amazon has transformed the world of business through the creation of an ongoing process of dialogue and response. These “feedback loops” empower consumers and enable companies to innovate, allowing them to constantly provide new and better products and services that directly address consumer interests. Well-functioning private markets excel at meeting customer needs based on their continual feedback. But with social change organizations similarly desperate to find fitting solutions for the people they are trying to help, it’s curious that they haven’t been able to tap into this methodology. Why can’t social change organizations implement feedback programs that are equally effective? Is it possible to create similar mechanisms that require social change organizations to listen to what communities want—and then act on what they hear?

On #datavis judging: Jeff Knezovich's advice

On #datavis judging: Jeff Knezovich's advice | Communication and global development | Scoop.it

At the end of the day, data visualisations are a communication tool. It’s important, therefore, that they follow common communication practices in order to make them as effective as possible. That might mean making them ‘sticky’ (i.e. memorable). Chip and Dan Heath suggest that is done SUCCESsfully — by keeping it Simple, making it Unexpected, ensuring it is Credible, relating it to something Concrete and tangible, appealing to Emotion, and telling a clear Story.

Rethinking social accountability in Africa

This visual summary explains the main messages of 'Rethinking social accountability in Africa: lessons from the Mwananchi Programme', a major new report exploring what works for creating better outcomes for poor people by helping them hold their governments to account.

Despite economic progress in Africa, rising inequality is slowing the rate at which growth delivers better services to poor people. After millions of dollars of donor investment, ordinary citizens across the continent are still missing opportunities to hold their governments to account in a consistent and meaningful way.

What's going wrong? And what can be done to change it?

Integrating ICTs into Communication for Development programs with adolescent girls

Integrating ICTs into Communication for Development programs with adolescent girls | Communication and global development | Scoop.it
Social, cultural, economic and political traditions and systems that prevent girls, especially the most marginalized, from fully achieving their rights present a formidable challenge to development organizations. The integration of new Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) to the Communication for Development (C4D) toolbox offers an additional means for challenging unequal power relations and increasing participation of marginalized girls in social
transformation.
