Cynthia Guo: What I learned in the UOKM class

Cynthia Guo: What I learned in the UOKM class | Communication and KM | Scoop.it
Pierre Levy's insight:

For my entire student life, I am always busy learning and learning. I read and write everyday and get knowledge from the outside world. I barely think about how to manage what I have learned and how to apply them in my future study and life. After the first class of knowledge management, I found it was so fascinating because it made me start thinking about my learning process. Just like this blog post, we can go through the knowledge and reflect back what we have learned. Also I really like the format of our class, I mean using facebook, twitter, scoop.it and other social media. We are learning communication in a fast changing and high technological mass media environment. There is no better way for us to study and research the mass media than that we are part of what we are learning.

What I Learned in the UOKM Class

What I learned in the UOKM class Professor Lévy's Knowledge Management class, like any good learning opportunity, raised more questions than answers.  After all, 'good teachers don't give knowledge...
Pierre Levy's insight:

I’ve learned much more because of UOKM than in UOKM.  The distinction might seem minor, but it relates to ideas about the acquisition of knowledge and how we evaluate KM practice for learning and improvement

What I learned in the #UOKM class

The end of the semester is, inevitably—no matter how many times we tell ourselves that next semester we’ll be more organized—a time of frenzied paper writing, exam studying and assignment completio...
Pierre Levy's insight:

Another key concept discussed this semester is that of the network society. Manuel Castells, an expert on the network society, says that technologies of mass self-communication have given rise to the network society and given people the tools to come together and create a collective power (Castells, 2007). Castells believes that social networks can also be used as sites of counter-power in a positive and progressive way, as was seen with the Occupy movement or the Arab spring, where social networking sites where used to mobilize protesters (Castells, 2007). The use of these technologies allows for micro broadcasting and the viral spread of information to a mass public (Juris, 2012). Using social networks such as Twitter and Facebook lowers the barriers for access, while using hashtags to trend a topic helps to form a collective identity (Juris, 2012).

Pierre Levy's curator insight, April 7, 2013 9:19 AM

It is interesting to contemplate that although individuals have access to a lot of information today, one can foresee that advances in science and technology will cause future generations to view our knowledge management practices with the same curiosity that we do the Greeks.

coincidiendo con varios sobre cómo se construye el conocimiento

Mlik Sahib's curator insight, December 9, 2013 8:19 PM

"On-line, nearly everything we do influences the structure of the network (through stigmergy). This calls for responsibility with regard to our role in shaping mankind’s collective memory. As we become simultaneously readers, authors, critics, editors, curators, librarians… we must come to integrate the notion of citizenship of the knowledge society. In ethical terms, this entails that we help others orient themselves in the collective memory."

Deborah Verran's curator insight, January 26, 9:19 PM

This graphic depicts how knowledge may flow within any organization. Active management of the various processes falls within the realms of knowledge management.

Pierre Levy's insight:

In UOKM class, Professor Lévy convincingly argued that the 21st century world is quickly evolving into a data-centric, algorithmic and global culture. This is essentially a knowledge society, where abstract and technological knowledge becomes a primary resource and organizing principle, and progress is the result of the integration of that knowledge with everyday, practical life

Pierre Levy's insight:

While our search tools are imperfect and our access to false information has increased, knowledge seekers have more sources of information at their fingertips than ever before, which symbolizes a promising start to the digital revolution.

What I learned in the UOKM class

Knowledge has always been essential to human civilization. The evolution of knowledge can be traced to the ways in which it is communicated, or transferred. In prehistoric times, knowledge was tran...
Pierre Levy's insight:

The term “collective intelligence” generally refers to the cognitive abilities of a collection of individuals. Several of the works discussed in the class (e.g., Networked, Convergence Culture, and Semantic Sphere) discuss the opportunities involved in online collaboration.
