Notes from the Chapter 9 section “The Temporalities of Labor History”, Sewell WH, Jr (2005) Logics of History: Social theory and social transformation. Chicago, IL: University of Chicago Press.

p. 273 Temporality of any historical sequence is complex, i.e. ‘combination of many different social processes with varying temporalities’. Three types of temporality:
Trends = ‘directional changes in social relations’, marked by historians as ‘rise’, ‘fall’, ‘decline’, etc.
Routines = ‘practical schemas that reproduce structures’. Institutions are ‘machines for the production and maintenance of routines’.
Events = ‘temporally concentrated sequences of actions that transform structures’

The Campaigner: A Crowd Sourcing Online Platform for Girls’ and Women’s Rights Organisations / Announcements / News & Analysis / Homepage - AWID | network activism | Scoop.it

In recent years, digital activism has been a key component in every social mobilization from the green movement protests in Iran, to the movement to overthrow Mubarak in Egypt, to the #EverydaySexism phenomenon on Twitter. The Campaigner will link inspiration with action so that everyone can be an activist for women’s and girls’ rights and empowerment. It will be the only online, digitally networked, global feminist community and movement building tool that includes direct engagement, support to campaigns, advocacy and learning, and the ability to donate to causes world-wide.

Clive McGoun's insight:

Definitely worth getting involved.

How Network-Centric Organizing Made the People's Climate March - techPresident

How Network-Centric Organizing Made the People's Climate March - techPresident | network activism | Scoop.it

Many of the ideas that made the Climate March possible, including the hubs platform, came out of the Occupy movement. Tammy Shapiro, the hub coordinator, was an Occupy Wall Street vet and had worked on InterOccupy (IO), a networking and communication tool for activists.

(Each hub had their own coordinator, but Shapiro was the coordinator for all the hubs. The title was deliberately chosen because it does not imply dictation or leadership, but something closer to assistance or facilitation.)

“One of the things I learned [during my work on Occupy] was what it means to self-organize,” Shapiro told techPresident. “There was a lot of energy, but there was no one in charge of it.”

Rethinking Syrian media - Open Democracy

Rethinking Syrian media - Open Democracy | network activism | Scoop.it

Syrians discovered, to their cost, that the content produced by individuals through new technologies was not enough to convey their own true narratives for the world to see. The lack of contextualisation, as well as the fragmentation of Syrian activists in a myriad of groups, pages, and profiles, often made it very difficult for external observers (and sometimes even for Syrians) to make sense of what was going on.

Clive McGoun's insight:

So the division between activists, who it is claimed lack journalistic professionalism, and journalists who are professional emerged. And with it the development of news outlets and radio stations. i.e. organised media to counter the limitations of horizontal, unfiltered content production and distribution.

We need traditional media as much as we need digital activists.
