American Sniper grossed record numbers at the U.S. box office this weekend. A surprising result, not least because a high quality leak was widely available prior to the premiere, resulting in millions of pirate downloads and streams. How can this be?

The CEO of the IFPI in Austria has been defending his group's attempts to have The Pirate Bay and other torrent sites blocked by local ISPs. Franz Medwenitsch says that using the word "blocking" in these situations is wrong and defending copyright by disabling access to websites does not amount to censorship.

Hoping to deter and stop the ongoing threat of 'cyber' attacks President Obama unveiled new cybersecurity plans yesterday. While the plans don't reference copyright infringement, the MPAA notes that Congress should keep online piracy in mind as it drafts its new cybersecurity bill.

Political: Due to the current protests in Hong Kong, China has blocked the BBC website. A government official claimed that outsiders were conspiring with the protestors in Hong Kong. The government also blocked the BBC website back in 2012 for several days. This relates to politics because of the fact that the communist ruling government is putting down a democratic-government-seeking protest.

Lily and Cami's curator insight, October 17, 2014 12:14 AM

China-Political:

Recently in China there has been a major conflict with police and pro-democracy protesters, mainly in Hong Kong, China. Most of this conflict is on the censoring of the UK's national broadcaster, the BBC. Outside sources have been a major influence on the protesters and they have started making drastic moves towards violence and destruction.

Brussels, 3 April 2014 — Today the European Parliament adopted in first reading the Regulation on the Single Telecoms Market (see the vote call). By amending the text with the amendment proposals made by the Social-Democrats (S&D), Greens (Greens/EFA), United Left (GUE/NGL) and Liberals (ALDE), the Members of the European Parliament took a historic step for the protection of Net Neutrality and the Internet commons in the European Union. La Quadrature du Net warmly thanks all citizens, organisations and parliamentarians who took part in this campaign, and calls on them to remain mobilised for the rest of the legislative procedure.
