Restoring Learning Technologies for Students in the Commonwealth of Dominica

Restoring Learning Technologies for Students in the Commonwealth of Dominica  | Commonwealth of Dominica | Scoop.it
The Rotary Club of Lethbridge East is celebrating the realization of their goal to restore information technologies to 23 schools in Dominica.   Our Rotary Club partnered with host club, the Rotary Club of Portsmouth (Dominica), the Rotary Club of Bracebridge (Ontario) and the IT for Dominica Foundation on this Global Grant funded project.   The need for this project arose after Hurricane Maria, a Category 5 hurricane, caused wide spread damage to Dominica in 2017.  This damaged included the destruction of almost all of the computers and much of the libraries in Dominican schools.

It is with great pleasure I announce the relaunch of a new look and feel of the Dominica High Commission’s website. This new layout will provide us with a platform to communicate effectively with a wider audience of the Diaspora. I believe you will find it extremely useful and insightful as a member of the Diaspora. In addition, I am hoping it will appeal to our younger members as the intent is to provide inclusion at all levels with Dominicans, children of Dominicans, Friends of Dominicans and others simply curious about Dominica.

Dominica Botanic Gardens

Dominica Botanic Gardens | Commonwealth of Dominica | Scoop.it
This new website, DominicaGardens.com, is designed to preserve the several sub-sites hosted by the old Dominica Academy of Arts and Sciences (DAAS) that need regular updating and refreshing. My associate, Raglan Riviere, was the main architect of the DAAS website. With his passing, write-access to that website for updating purposes was lost, and updating ceased.

Primary among these sub-sites that need updating was the Dominica Botanic Gardens website, an informative and beauty-packed gem that attracted viewers from around the world. Other sub-sites included the DAAS Honorees, the Dominica Island Scholars, and the Historical Cabinet Photos. All of these sub-sites required regular updating and refreshing, for which I was responsible.

Caribbean hurricane season ‘will be different this time’ – Dominica News Online

Caribbean hurricane season ‘will be different this time’ – Dominica News Online | Commonwealth of Dominica | Scoop.it
Fifteen-year-old Ahijah Williams is terrified by the idea of another hurricane season.

He is a student at North East Comprehensive School in Wesley, Dominica. He remembers how he felt when Hurricane Maria, a devastating Category 5 storm, ripped through his community 12 months ago.

“I was extremely horrified to hear those winds howling like wolves in the sky and houses flying away and people dying,” he says.

Although fearful of the dangers that the 2018 hurricane season could bring, he says he “would like to be more ready this time: prepare for the season, stock up on food, repair houses.”
