High Standards Help Struggling Students: New Evidence | Education Sector

High Standards Help Struggling Students: New Evidence | Education Sector | College and Career-Ready Standards for School Leaders | Scoop.it

Do higher standards hurt struggling students? High Standards Help Struggling Students: New Evidence, argues that the answer to that question is “no.” In the analysis, Education Sector analysts Constance Clark and Peter Cookson Jr. use state-by-state NAEP data to examine the effect of high standards on student achievement. They find there is no evidence that high standards have hurt low-achieving students. In fact, they found that higher standards have probably helped.

"There is no reason for states to dilute the strength of the standards with lower expectations of performance.” High standards bring out the best in students."

Handwriting: Some states buck the trend and preserve penmanship

Handwriting: Some states buck the trend and preserve penmanship | College and Career-Ready Standards for School Leaders | Scoop.it

Is cursive a waste of time? California schools don't think so.

Handwriting Research shows that forming letters by hand, as opposed to typing them into a computer, not only helps young children develop their fine motor skills but also improves their ability to recognize letters — a capacity that, in turn, predicts reading ability at age 5. But many schools are now emphasizing typing over writing. Last year, for example, the Indiana Department of Education announced that the state’s public schools no longer had to teach cursive writing and they should ensure that students were “proficient in keyboard use” instead. http://ideas.time.com/2012/11/08/why-kids-should-learn-cu-cursive/
