Pennsylvania on board with Common Core standards for students

Pennsylvania on board with Common Core standards for students | College and Career-Ready Standards for School Leaders | Scoop.it
Starting next school year, public schools in Pennsylvania and in much of the country will use a more rigorous curriculum aimed at unifying educational standards.

Critics lashed back in some states that adopted the standards, but in Pennsylvania limited resistance resulted when the Pennsylvania State Board of Education, a 21-member panel with 17 members appointed by the governor, approved their adoption in 2010.

“That‘s because the standards are not really in any conflict with standards that Pennsylvania already has,” said Ron Cowell, president of the nonprofit Education Policy and Leadership Center in Harrisburg.

Wow! Don't know how to respond when teachers say "It's not MY job" regarding literacy skills? Need a professional, well thought out answer to why taking higher levels of math in high school helps achievement in general? It's in here-- and so is everything else you wanted to know about Common Core.

Rufus Hannah's curator insight, October 5, 2013 6:29 PM

We are piloting Common Core resources with elementary students at my school. We are realizing the challenges of working without textbooks - how much teachers need to know about lesson design along with assessment for and of learning.

Remedial Courses: Colleges rely too heavily on placement tests

"Fully half of all undergraduates and 70 percent of community college students take at least one remedial course, which are generally not credit-bearing.

Inside Higher Ed
Research released earlier this year found that commonly used placement tests fail to adequately determine whether incoming college students need remedial coursework. Yet most colleges rely exclusively on tests like the ACCUPLACER or COMPASS, according to a
new study from the National Assessment Governing Board.

Accurate and automated assessment can greatly improve instruction. This is especially true when teachers have easy access to results, and when results are considered formative information.

It' is important to note that these are Common Core driven tests that the kids take directly on the computer.  As a long time Nevada teacher (retired), I'm always interested in what the Silver State is up to!

The short answer is yes. The Common Core State Standards are not arbitrary but draw on a firm foundation of the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) frameworks in reading and writing as well as conclusions from the Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS) report.

Remedial coursetaking may have dropped since 1999-2000

Remedial coursetaking may have dropped since 1999-2000 | College and Career-Ready Standards for School Leaders | Scoop.it

Inside Higher Ed

January 4, 2013

A study released Thursday by the National Center for Education Statistics, "First-Year Undergraduate Remedial Coursetaking: 1999-2000, 2003-04, and 2007-08," shows that the proportion of first-year undergraduate students reporting that they took remedial courses rose slightly from 2003-4 to 2007-8, to 20 percent from 19 percent.

But the 2007-8 figure was significantly lower than the 26 percent reported by first-year students in 1999-2000, a pattern that holds for many different types of institutions and students, as seen in the tables below.

Contrary to what you may have read elsewhere, the new Common Core curriculum coming to Ohio and most other states by 2014 does not mandate that schools toss books like Catcher in the Rye and To Kill a Mockingbird from what they teach.

"Alarmist articles decrying the replacement of classic literature, such as The Catcher in the Rye, with instruction manuals are far off base from the language and intent of the Standards, which is, simply: read better texts."
