A Lesson from KY on the Importance of CCSS Community Engagement | Hunt Institute | College and Career-Ready Standards for School Leaders | Scoop.it

By Cherry Boyles, Instructional Supervisor, Washington County Schools

Throughout the country, there is much debate regarding implementation of the Common Core. Supporters believe this new set of standards will require educators to teach to a higher cognitive level enabling students to become better prepared for the global challenges they will face. Those opposed to the Common Core share concerns that not all students will be encouraged to reach their full potential because the Standards will become the “ceiling” of instruction.

Classroom Strategies to Foster a Growth Mindset

Classroom Strategies to Foster a Growth Mindset | College and Career-Ready Standards for School Leaders | Scoop.it
What are actions teachers can take to help their students develop a growth mindset?

As Professor Carol Dweck -- one of authors of today's guest response and the developer of the term and concept -- has written elsewhere:

Individuals with a fixed mindset believe that their intelligence is simply an inborn trait--they have a certain amount, and that's that. In contrast, individuals with a growth mindset believe that they can develop their intelligence over time.

Shanahan on Close Reading: Help We Can't Use

Shanahan on Close Reading: Help We Can't Use | College and Career-Ready Standards for School Leaders | Scoop.it

Close reading is not a reading strategy, but an approach to reading.

"In the instructional context, the idea of close reading has been to shift the attention during the reading lesson off of strategies and skills and onto the texts and ideas. The notion is that if students are engaged in close reading throughout their education, they will develop a rich body of knowledge about the world and these reading practices will become habits of mind."

Close reading is an old, widely known and specific concept that indicates where meaning resides (in the text) and what readers must do to gain access to this meaning (read the text closely, weighing the author’s words and ideas, and relying heavily on the evidence in the text).

Free Common Core standards that mind map and timeline creation address | College and Career-Ready Standards for School Leaders | Scoop.it

by Richard Byrne

Here is a list of ten mind mapping tools for teachers and students. Some of those tools were used this morning in a workshop that I facilitated in Missoula, Montana. Part of the purpose of the day here is for teachers to get familiar with some of the Common Core standards and some ways to address them. I pulled out some of the Common Core standards that I think mind map and timeline creation address.

Everyone hopes new standards will get students out of a reading slump. But the demand for more nonfiction reading is being resisted by English teachers.

Bauerlein and Stotsky report

...doesn’t see why English classes have to carry the nonfiction weight. Social studies and science courses can do that. The real battle, he says, will be in the elementary schools, where lesson plans have failed to provide the vocabulary, background knowledge and context that make good readers."

Funding for Pre-K and K will impact teacher evaluations

Foundation for Chid Development

"Counting Kids and Tracking Funds in Pre-K and Kindergarten: Falling Short at the Local Level"

"Not all states require or fund full-day kindergarten. What’s more, current early childhood data makes it difficult to discern within many states how many schools have half- or full-day kindergarten."

"Such information is of particular concern as states usher in not only the Common Core State Standards, but also changes to teacher evaluation."

“As teachers begin to alter their instruction to match the Common Core State Standards for kindergarten, their instruction may differ greatly depending on whether their students are attending a half or a full day of school.”
