Connie Wise's curator insight, April 1, 2013 9:56 AM

Reflecting on this article and comment from Elizabeth Sky-McIlvain's comment,March 30,

"Despite the weightiness of this review of research, the conclusions should be carefully considered. Highlighting, noting or underlining is invaluable when a reader is completing a targeted analysis (eg. use of symbols, character development through speech and actions). Combined with rereading, it is at the core of much literary analysis. And we have to query conclusions for which there is no age-appropriate research. Teacher need still to go with their experience on most of these points."
Susan Grigsby @sksgrigsby's comment, April 17, 2013 4:17 PM
The key, to me, is "not supported by research." I think the quality teacher will know when highlighting, noting or underlining is an important part of the task at hand. Should we rely heavily on it? Perhaps not. I don't think this is an "either or" thing but rather another POV to consider when thinking about best practice.
