Education, the Brain and Common Core State Standards

Education, the Brain and Common Core State Standards | Common Core State Standards SMUSD | Scoop.it
Understanding even the basics of how the brain learns -- how people perceive, process and remember information -- can help teachers and students successfully meet the requirements of the Common Core
Mary Clark's insight:

Brain-Targeted Teaching is new to me, but it makes sense.  I know my learning is affected by my environment, which makes me wonder how any learning gets done in overcrowded classrooms with no natural light.  Good article to discuss with teachers.

Dr. Dea Conrad-Curry's curator insight, May 25, 10:46 AM

I truly believe that educators must understand brain functioning in order to be the best teacher, administrator, coach, et al. Last week I sat in on a session about brain based learning and the common core; had I put into practice all that the presenter urged, we would have never gotten to the academics. Moderation is key.

Common Core State Standards are calling for more focus on students reading charts and graphics, but new research shows engaging graphics can reduce students' understanding of chart data.

If this holds true, is it because we're not teaching students how to read infographics, or because the design really is distracting?  I'll be interested in further research on this.
