Background

As you may know, the State of New Mexico is transitioning to the Common Core Standards by the 2014-15 school year.

The purpose of the Common Core State Standards is to provide a consistent, clear understanding of what students are expected to learn, so teachers and parents know what they need to do to help them.

The standards are designed to be robust and relevant to the real world, reflecting the knowledge and skills that our young people need for success in college and careers. With American students fully prepared for the future, our communities will be best positioned to compete successfully in the global economy.

Writing Prompts and Bell Ringers

Writing Prompts and Bell Ringers | Common Core State Standards: Resources for School Leaders | Scoop.it

This site contains hundreds of ideas for Writing Prompts.

"These are some of the daily writing prompts that I use in class. The prompts and pictures are scraped together from so many sources - forgotten websites, old journals, overheard conversations, the crusty recesses of my hard drive - that attribution is difficult.

The Illustrative Mathematics Project

The Illustrative Mathematics Project | Common Core State Standards: Resources for School Leaders | Scoop.it

This site, currently in beta, will offer practitioners a set of tasks for one standard at each grade level K-8.

In the future, "the sets of tasks will include elaborated teaching tasks with detailed information about using them for instructional purposes, rubrics, and student work. Such a fully developed set of tasks will be what we call a Complete Illustration of the standard."

Right now we are trying to build up our collection of Initial Illustrations of standards, which will have the following characteristics:

- A minimum of 4 tasks (although typically 5-6 or more depending on the standard).

- Most will be more like assessment tasks or brief teaching tasks. At least one will be the kernel of an instructional task that can eventually be more fully developed and elaborated with the help of teachers using it in classrooms.

- The tasks in the set will vary in difficulty. Some but not all will be scaffolded.

- A balance in computational/algorithmic and conceptual tasks.

- An appropriate number of contextual problems for the standard.

- Most of the tasks will illuminate the “center of mass” of the standard, and a few will light up the periphery.

- At least one task will bridge in some way to another standard, ideally across domains or grade levels.

The implementation of common core standards also should provide a comprehensive guide for instructional delivery through well articulated maps, with information ranging from how the curriculum will be thematically integrated, to the depth of knowledge required to complete a task, to how student results will be authentically assessed.

Lauren Yachera's curator insight, February 16, 2:26 PM

Since my concentration is in math, this was an incredibly helpful website to come across. There was a ton of really useful information; there was even a video with cartoon drawings to help explain the mathematics standards! I found myself searching through all of the links out of curiosity and interest- I definitely recommend this link to everyone, even if their concentration isn't in math. Knowing the requirements for teaching math will really help to create an effective PBL.
