This Common Core math problem asks kids to write the ‘friendly’ answer, instead of the correct one! | common core state standards | Scoop.it
A second grader's answers to a Common Core-aligned math worksheet were marked as incorrect because they weren't (This Common Core math problem asks kids to write the ‘friendly’ answer, instead of the correct one!
Marcine Adams's insight:

I understand how this could seem ridiculous. I agree that the students should have gotten the points, but have just been reminded of the method they were supposed to use. I believe teacher need to not be as harsh when it comes to a students performance. I do understand that the skill they might have been working on is using friendly numbers because this may help another student having a hard time with subtraction, but there is not need to punish a student who has arrived at the right answer. What message was this teacher trying to send?

Common Core myths dispelled
Pratt Tribune
Kansas school districts are embracing CCSS because it is more rigorous than No Child Left Behind. No Child did not promote problem solving or develop creativity.
Marcine Adams's insight:

This article is outdated. I believe even parents know that the CCSS is a state wide initiative, but when everyone just wants the best for their child anything to help them they will try. CCSS has many myths and I believe this is not one. There is more of a miss-understanding than a myth.

New York teachers turn on Common Core

New York teachers turn on Common Core | common core state standards | Scoop.it
The board of the New York state teachers union this weekend unanimously withdrew its support for the Common Core standards as they have been implemented — a major blow for Common Core advocates who have been touting support from teachers as proof...
Marcine Adams's insight:

This is the first article that confirms what I have been hearing about how educators are feeling about the CCSS. I believe it won't be the last. It was intersting to hear how the New York State United Teachers admit that they have failed. It confirmed how other states, including Illinois, did not do well on the first round of testing. Although it was expected the system was changed so school and teachers were hit with the reprocussions of low test scores. The New York State United Teachers is demanding “major course corrections” before it can consider supporting the standards again.
Showing how it is back to the drawing board for the common core if they would like to be successful.

Fake Signatures Found On Okla. Common Core Petition

Fake Signatures Found On Okla. Common Core Petition | common core state standards | Scoop.it
The group, Stand for Children Oklahoma, presented a petition to legislators in early March with 7,000 signatures, but many people whose names are on the list said they didn't sign it. (Oh my!
Marcine Adams's insight:

I understand why parents may be confused, angry, or frustrated without knowing enough about the common core. Yet a petition with fake signatures is not helping the students. We need to start putting more energy in helping our students succeed.

Hidden Common Core skills students need to learn…and how to learn them | eSchool News | eSchool News

Hidden Common Core skills students need to learn…and how to learn them | eSchool News | eSchool News | common core state standards | Scoop.it
What are the digital skills the Common Core requires of students but doesn't specifically mention? Are these skills the same for every grade?
Marcine Adams's insight:

This article caught my interest with using the word hidden in the title. This article brought up a very good point about the technology expectations "hidden" in  the common core. Some might argue that this article is interpreting the initiative wrong, but I believe this is they way many teachers are trying to meet the standards of the common core. Digital skills are needed to be a successful 21st century learner but I feel many school are playing catch up with trying to stay up to date with the times.

Marcine Adams's insight:

This article brings up some not suprising discoveries. The Common Core State Standards has great plans for the future (like my new years resolutions), but you need to prepare the entire education community when you are going to try to make such a big impact on the eduation system or this  will fail ( like half my resolutions). This article mentions how important a principal is in being the leader within a school when it comes to new implementation.  I agree with the statement and believe without a strong foundation teachers will not be able to teach to the Common Core. The Common Core has big goals that I hope last...
