Actually Achieving Close Reading With Digital Tools

While there are still many active, avid readers, survey data that I have collected with Dr. Kristen Turner from Fordham University from 802 middle and high school students shows that only 7% of them read regularly on a tablet or ereader at school (forthcoming), while the Pew Internet and American Life Project reports that 93% of teens have a computer at home, and 78% have a smartphone. Despite the increasing access to computers and mobile technologies, we found that many of them are not using use these tools for active digital reading. - Troy Hicks

Linda Dougherty's insight:

This reaffirms what I've noticed with my high school library students.  Almost 100% of them prefer a printed book vs. an ebook.  The few that read digitally have their own e-readers such as Kindle or tablet. Most who use a tablet either use Overdrive from the public libraries or simply purchase titles via Amazon.  Several have mentioned with Kindle, they use the Audio sync with their purchased books to take advantage of having audio to listen as they read along.

Hello Literacy: Elephants & Technology Integration - Common Core Style

Hello Literacy: Elephants & Technology Integration - Common Core Style | Books, Reading, and School Libraries | Scoop.it
8 times a year, our school closes early for teacher planning called Early Release Days, 8:45am-1:15pm.  The morning schedule gets wonky and in order to preserve a common planning time for all grade levels, so we (the support teachers)  all pitch in and help teach an extra special or two.  This morning I taught Mrs. Strutz's 3rd grade class...some students I regularly have for reading groups and some students, I don't.  I had 50 minutes to do a stand-alone lesson with them so here's what I did (to support the Geography, Environmental Literacy & Culture SS strand):
Linda Dougherty's insight:

Awesome lesson combining Google Forms, Informational text, and Edmodo.  Can see this being used on all grade levels!

If you’re like most English Language Arts teachers, you’ve probably reviewed the new informational text requirements and wondered: What books do I choose? Actually Achieving Close Reading With Digital Tools | Books, Reading, and School Libraries | Scoop.it

"The main point that I would add here — in a conversation about the common core, close reading, and the integration of technology — is that we, as teachers, can help our students cultivate active reading habits if we teach them how to use these tools efficiently."

Linda Dougherty's insight:

The Scarecrow  - At first glance, you think of this as a commercial media video connection to autumn, farms, and scarecrows and Chipotle.  However, this connects to middle and high school units on environment, agri business, farming issues, fast food, and chemically enhanced foods. Would be a great lead-in to reading and discussing print articles curated from online databases and websites.  Add this video to a text set for environmental science, biology, and current events classes.
