@PaulineZd  has good, practical insight that K-6 and secondary Enlish teachers need to increase their use of non-fiction texts.

Dr. Dea Conrad-Curry's curator insight, January 6, 6:36 PM

Short and practical ideas. But, remember that when the Common Core cites informational text as important, that means much more than reading narrative nonfiction. I find the use of the term "nonfiction novels" more than problematic. Call a book by its genre: generating an oxymoron is officious.

A number of good points made in this blog. Sentence frames are great for strugglers, so that is not at the top of my list, so be sure and keep reading!!

Lucas Arnestad's curator insight, January 6, 8:49 PM

Teaching academic language is very important in all grades. By teaching kids these vocabulary words it helps them solve higher level problems by understanding every part of the problem. Eventually with consistent learning of new vocabulary it makes the student have better grades, get into a better college, and then get a great job. This article introduces 8 strategies of teaching academic language. If I were a teacher I would dynamically introduce academic vocabulary. It's having your students read authentic context with vocabulary words in the text. Repeated encounters with a word can help students internalize the definition. When I was younger, unlike some kids, I didn't want to read very much. So having every student in your class read the vocabulary filled test insures that every student has a chance to learn.

"The ultimate goal of the classroom is the link between improved thinking skills and problem solving"

"The ultimate goal of the classroom is the link between improved thinking skills and problem solving" | Common Core Standards | Scoop.it

The Common Core States Standards (CCSS) are a positive step. They place a major emphasis on real world applications in education. These connections must be constantly reinforced in the classroom. That cannot, however, always be accomplished with games or videos. Instead, it requires teachers that understand that the ultimate goal of the classroom is the link between improved thinking skills and problem solving regardless of the particular curriculum.

Common Core Gains New Ally - TFA

COMMON CORE GAINS AN ALLY: Teach for America plans to come out in support of the Common Core today by urging the states that have adopted the standards to stick with it, despite the loud and passionate opposition. TFA co-CEOs Elisa Villanueva Beard and Matthew Kramer said they joined Team Core because they have "seen firsthand how children (and adults) rise to meet higher expectations." TFA recruits will be trained on Common Core materials in at least some regions this summer. But the group is being careful not to alienate states that haven't adopted the standards - or that are thinking of pulling out. The CEOs' statement notes that they support other standards, too, "as long as they are truly college- and career-ready."

3 easy steps to understanding the Common Core

3 easy steps to understanding the Common Core | Common Core Standards | Scoop.it

In order to better understand an issue that will affect every aspect of K-12 schooling, I recommend you take three important steps:

1.Watch Mike McShane’s Top 3 video (below) on the Common Core.

2.Read “5 Things Every Parent Needs to Know About the Common Core” and AEI’s recent research paper series, which addresses how the Common Core will affect other school improvement efforts.

3. Engage in the conversation. Don’t just jump on the pro- or anti- bandwagon; ask hard questions and seek out answers… because kids’ futures are depending on it.
