For more than a decade, research studies of mathematics education in high-performing countries have concluded that mathematics education in the United States must become substantially more focused and coherent in order to improve mathematics achievement in this country. To deliver on this promise, the mathematics standards are designed to address the problem of a curriculum that is “a mile wide and an inch deep.”

Tracy B. Watterson's insight:

NRICH promotes the learning of mathematics through problem solving. They provide engaging problems with support for teachers in the classroom. NRICH believes that: problems solving tasks can provoke mathematical thinking, that students can learn by exploring, noticing and discussing (which can lead to conjecturing, explaining, generalising, convincing and proof), that the students' role is to focus on the mathematics while the teacher focuses on the learners, and that the teacher should aim to do for students only what they cannot yet do for themselves.

"The fact that, for the first time, the U.S. has what is essentially a national curriculum, equivalent in quality to what is found in the highest scoring countries in the world, means that the focus of leadership can finally shift from arguing about what math to teach, to how best to teach the agreed upon content to all students."

Tracy B. Watterson's insight:

Waiting for the Digital Library and the Interim Assessments? They'll be available in the next month or so. In the meantime, grab a colleague or two and  check out the Training Test to learn more about how to navigate the tests,  and the Practice Test to see what types of questions will be asked at each grade level.  In addition to the test practice the site offers publications and resources to help teachers better understand all aspects of SBAC.

The Virtual Lecture Series' are an initiative of Illustrative Mathematics to increase school and district exposure to national experts on a variety of PD topics.  The theme of the fall-winter 2014-2015 series is "Working with Number in the Elementary School Classroom."  The intended audience for this series is classroom teachers, mathematics coaches, district and state level math experts, or math teacher leaders that develop or facilitate professional development.

The format of Virtual Lecture Series is an hour long session each month.  Each session will feature a national expert as a guest speaker.  The speaker will present for approximately 40 minutes followed by 20 minutes of question and answer from participants.

Math Tasks to Talk About (TCM)

Math Tasks to Talk About (TCM) | Resources for Elementary Mathematics | Scoop.it

"Highly effective teachers know their students well. They can attend to students’ mathematical thinking, and then design instruction that capitalizes on what students know and are able to do. Our collaborative efforts often center on contextualized tasks, or story problems, where students have opportunities to think about and reason through problem-solving situations. Yet we know first hand how challenging this work can be."

Tracy B. Watterson's insight:

Take some time to read Preparing for Problem-Solving Interview, which focuses on how students approach problem-solving situations. Then as a follow-up to the interview, trying having students solve this derivation of the classic People of Freckleham problem (Treffers and Vonk 1987), and think about what students said and did during the interview to support their work and discussion of the task.

The Nellie Mae Education Foundation - An Up-Close Look at Student-Centered Math Teaching

The Nellie Mae Education Foundation - An Up-Close Look at Student-Centered Math Teaching | Resources for Elementary Mathematics | Scoop.it

Today, far too many students see mathematics as a subject to be endured, rather than a subject of real-world importance and personal value. But this doesn't have to be the case. When teachers use student-centered techniques to engage students in more active and authentic ways, they can transform math classrooms into lively learning environments in which students take charge of their own learning, collaborate with others, persist in solving complicated problems and make meaningful connections to the world around them.

A new study from the American Institutes for Research (AIR) finds that students in high-quality, student-centered classrooms are more engaged and demonstrate higher performance on problem-solving assessments.

Vermont Agency of Education

Vermont Agency of Education | Resources for Elementary Mathematics | Scoop.it

Mathematics education in Vermont is currently centered on the Common Core State Standards (CCSS). The CCSS for Mathematics contain both content and practice standards for students, which define what students should understand and be able to do. The Progressions Project, by the writers of the CCSS, provides a roadmap as to how expectations for students develop within a domain in the standards. These Standards do not dictate curriculum or teaching methods, and are not intended to be new names for old ways of doing business. They are a call to take the next step.

The Ongoing Assessment Project

The Ongoing Assessment Project | Resources for Elementary Mathematics | Scoop.it

OGAP has developed a rich bank of assessment items, detailed learning progression frameworks, and professional development materials for three major strands of grades 3-8 mathematics content: multiplicative reasoning, fractions, and proportions. These mathematics topics represent almost 80% of the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) at respective grade levels. OGAP works most effectively where teachers have time to examine student work together in professional learning communities or grade level meetings, and have a support structure of coaches or teacher leaders to provide ongoing support.
