BetterLesson

BetterLesson | Resources for Mathematics | Scoop.it

This project brings together 130+ brilliant, creative teachers in grades K-12 math and ELA. These talented (not to mention hardworking) folks are sharing lessons as they teach them everyday! And these aren't just the normal lessons; they're super accessible and classroom-ready. Our MTs even share reflections, real-life insight into what worked, what misfired and tips/tricks to successful Common Core implementation. This treasure trove of Common Core knowledge is growing every day.

Tracy B. Watterson's insight:

BetterLesson and the NEA have teamed up for this project that features two Vermont teachers in their roster of master teachers!

The Common Core State Standards provide a consistent, clear understanding of what students are expected to learn, so teachers and parents know what they need to do to help them. The standards are designed to be robust and relevant to the real world, reflecting the knowledge and skills that our young people need for success in college and careers. With American students fully prepared for the future, our communities will be best positioned to compete successfully in the global economy.

"We're real teachers, in the trenches, with a common passion for what we do. We don't work for companies. We're not consultants. We just do what we do, and now we do it with each other. And over time, we have become friends and not just colleagues. We want to be friends with you too."

The Ongoing Assessment Project

The Ongoing Assessment Project | Resources for Mathematics | Scoop.it

OGAP has developed a rich bank of assessment items, detailed learning progression frameworks, and professional development materials for three major strands of grades 3-8 mathematics content: multiplicative reasoning, fractions, and proportions. These mathematics topics represent almost 80% of the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) at respective grade levels. OGAP works most effectively where teachers have time to examine student work together in professional learning communities or grade level meetings, and have a support structure of coaches or teacher leaders to provide ongoing support.

Math Tasks to Talk About

Math Tasks to Talk About | Resources for Mathematics | Scoop.it

Ralph Connelly is Professor Emeritus in the Faculty of Education at Brock University in Ontario, where he taught elementary math methods courses for 30+ years. He is active in both NCTM, where he’s served on several committees, currently the Editorial Panel ofTCM, and NCSM, where he’s served two terms as Canadian Director as well as on numerous committees.

Tracy B. Watterson's insight:

The plan for the TCM blog is for a series of guest bloggers to continue adding to this rich collection as they share and discuss their favorite tasks, so Ralph will be stepping aside and make room for the next person. Enjoy the four tasks that Ralph has shared, and check back soon for tasks from the newest blogger!

The University of Arizona - Institute for Mathematics & Education

The University of Arizona - Institute for Mathematics & Education | Resources for Mathematics | Scoop.it

The Common Core State Standards in mathematics were built on progressions: narrative documents describing the progression of a topic across a number of grade levels, informed both by research on children's cognitive development and by the logical structure of mathematics. These documents were spliced together and then sliced into grade level standards. From that point on the work focused on refining and revising the grade level standards. The early drafts of the progressions documents no longer correspond to the current state of the standards.

iSolveIt

iSolveIt | Resources for Mathematics | Scoop.it

iSolveIt puzzles are designed so that they can be used at any time; they are not content-specific. Most middle and high school students have been able to solve several puzzles in a 15-minute session. They have the flexibility to be incorporated into the math curriculum in different ways. The puzzles include levels of increasing difficulty with embedded supports to aid students in discovering solutions, so that they can be used by students with the variety of skills and abilities found in a typical math class.

Tracy B. Watterson's insight:

These puzzles lend themselves well to the Mathematics Practices, and are a part of the CAST/UDL website, if you'd like to explore.

Talking About This Year's Common Core Tests

This site provides a space for you to share your observations of the new breed of standardized tests. What works? What doesn’t? Whether your district is piloting PARCC, Smarter Balanced, or its own test, we want to pass the microphone to you, the people closest to the students being tested. The world needs to hear your stories, insights, and suggestions. Our goal is collective accountability and responsiveness through a national, online conversation.

So find your state, click in, and share your observations. Please keep your comments constructive and specific. We hope you’ll sign your name – but anonymous is okay, too. Encourage everyone to contribute. Return often to hear what others across the nation are saying. Your voice matters!

Tracy B. Watterson's insight:

For those of you who attended the VMLC meeting in October, you will remember our keynote speaker, Steven Leinwand.  Steve is on the steering committee for this project, as well as some other big names in mathematics.
