Districts in some states aren't exactly going hog-wild spending money on their Common Core-related activities. A recent study has found that the bulk of the contract bids related to Common Core work put out in the last couple years were generated by districts in 11 of the 45 states that were committed to implementation of the state standards. The high-rollers were California and New York.

Gordon Shupe's curator insight, August 31, 8:54 AM

It is so good to hear significant studies and authorities verify and virtually repeat what my colleagues and I have said about Race to the Top and Teacher Assessment for several years! My favorite quote:

"Last month, the American Statistical Association urged states and school districts against using VAM systems to make personnel decisions, noting that recent studies have found that teachers account for a maximum of about 14 percent of a student’s test score, with other factors responsible for the rest.

Polikoff said policymakers should rethink how they use VAM models.

“We need to slow down or ease off completely for the stakes for teachers, at least in the first few years, so we can get a sense of what do these things measure, what does it mean,” Polikoff said. “We’re moving these systems forward way ahead of the science in terms of the quality of the measures.”"

Although the Common Core State Standards have become a true "brand" recognized by 81 percent of Americans (way up from just 38 percent last year), most people don't favor the idea of teachers using them to guide what's taught. In fact, six out of 10 oppose the idea of teachers using the standards, which are currently being adopted by 44 states and the District of Columbia.
