Connie Wise's insight:

"Big ideas about the past, we learn, are subject to change.

As you and your students read nonfiction, look for additional ways that authors shape their big ideas. Consider making a collection of mentor texts which students can refer to as they write."

Dennis T OConnor's curator insight, April 10, 12:24 PM

Mentor texts are a powerful way to teach both reading and writing, two activities that have a special place in the common core.  We can teach the way we want and still conect to the CCS.

In My Classroom: The Forest and the Trees: Visualizing and the Common Core

In My Classroom: The Forest and the Trees: Visualizing and the Common Core | Common Core Oklahoma | Scoop.it
Connie Wise's insight:

"Visualizing is a kind of inferring. When readers visualize, they fill in missing details with their own background knowledge.

As teachers begin teaching figurative language, often they focus on the identification--Can you find a simile? A metaphor? But the new standards point heavily toward interpretation. What does this simile mean? How does the author develop an idea by comparing these items? What is the author trying to tell us with this personification?

This is where visualizing becomes important."

Ban Yellow Highlighters! 5 Poor CCSS Teaching Strategies - Making the Common Core Practical

Ban Yellow Highlighters! 5 Poor CCSS Teaching Strategies - Making the Common Core Practical | Common Core Oklahoma | Scoop.it
5 teaching strategies that that are not supported by research: summaries, highlighting, keyword mnemonics, imagery for text learning, rereading.

Connie Wise's insight:

Reflecting on this article and comment from Elizabeth Sky-McIlvain's comment,March 30,

"Despite the weightiness of this review of research, the conclusions should be carefully considered. Highlighting, noting or underlining is invaluable when a reader is completing a targeted analysis (eg. use of symbols, character development through speech and actions). Combined with rereading, it is at the core of much literary analysis. And we have to query conclusions for which there is no age-appropriate research. Teacher need still to go with their experience on most of these points."

After reading this article, I have many questions....see if you do, too......I am already formulating my argumentative essay.....

Susan Grigsby's comment, April 17, 4:17 PM
The key, to me, is "not supported by research." I think the quality teacher will know when highlighting, noting or underlining is an important part of the task at hand. Should we rely heavily on it? Perhaps not. I don't think this is an "either or" thing but rather another POV to consider when thinking about best practice.

Connie Wise's insight:

"When we talk about technology integration in the classroom we are talking about a planned and highly structured and purposeful use of technology with students whose ultimate goal is to engage students and help them develop new thinking skills. Using technology, on the other hand, is a random and sporadic process whose main goal is to instruct students on content not to engage them with content."

Learn N C: Choosing books that are just right

Learn N C: Choosing books that are just right | Common Core Oklahoma | Scoop.it

"While taking a summer graduate course on Explorations in Literacy, I learned some specific direct instruction methods for teaching students to identify a “Just Right” (what I consider appropriate) book, a “Too Hard” book, and a “Too Easy” book. I combined that new knowledge with an intense assessment and accountability graduate class this summer that included the importance of self-assessment and provided some more self-assessment ideas. Consequently, I decided that one area of need in my classroom was for the students to do more self-assessment of their own independent reading levels in order for them to make better choices when they go the library to choose a book to read."

Connie Wise's insight:

FInding included that

Few 4th graders choose books at their level to read alone

The weaker the reader, the less likely the student will choose "just right" books

4th graders need instruction to choose "just right" books
