Life Cycle of a PARCC Test Item

Dr. Dea Conrad-Curry's curator insight, January 9, 2015 12:08 PM

I am currently working with teachers to develop their own Next Generation type test items. And why not? For sixty years we have modeled test items on standardized multiple choice formats with no one contesting the structure. As the format of high level assessment changes so should our classroom assessments. There is no need to prepare students for test formats if the those formats are familiar. By following the processes used by professional test making entities, teachers can have more confidence in their own work.

This page appears to have been published just after the first of the year, 2015. If you scroll down, there are a series of videos that could be very useful for PLC studies in aligning instruction to Common Core and assessment tools to PARCC. In my mind, whether a PARCC or SBAC or some other testing state, if you as a teacher get onboard with how your state's assessment tools work and embed their approaches into your daily instruction and formative assessments, students will have a more confident approach to the annual testing that no one likes but all are compelled to complete.

The English Department Chair and ELA Middle School Teacher understand that reading and writing are two branches off the same tree and therefore have created a two hour ELA block. Students are reading to write, while at the same time writing about their reading.

Georgia has put together a series of videos explaining how they are restructuring schedules and creating creating new, integrated units with instruction and assessment strategies that support CCSS.

This video is just one in the series that can be found here.

People do your research into 'COMMON CORE STATE STANDARDS " From what I have read about it stand up and say know ! To me is like China, Former Soviet Union and what Hitler had incorporated in schools ! We need good old fashion education it can be high tech sure . But the art of teaching and exciting young minds to learn are being taken over by Government make no mistake it is the core beliefs they want taught and will punish a school and teacher if not implemented . I do not know which is worse "NO CHILD LEFT BEHIND" or this to make sure they all march in straight line ! <3

Teachers May Need to Deepen Assessment Practices for Common Core

Teachers May Need to Deepen Assessment Practices for Common Core | Common Core Middle School | Scoop.it
As teachers transition to common standards, experts say they may need to take on more of a "teacher- researcher" role in the classroom.

Via Mel Riddile

Mel Riddile's curator insight, March 11, 2014 4:15 PM

Key Points on Formative Assessment:

  • With the common standards, "classrooms will look different," said Heritage. "We'll need a lot more talking, more focus, more discourse, more depth."
  • "For many teachers, formative assessment has traditionally consisted of quick checks for understanding, Friday quizzes, or exit slips as students head out the door. But as the majority of teachers around the country transition to the Common Core State Standards—which are designed to emphasize complexity, critical thinking, and skills like collaboration and reasoning—some experts say more teachers need to deepen their assessment practices."
  • "If you're asking students to think critically, you have to have formative-assessment practices that tap into that critical thinking," - Nancy Frey
  • "We need to know if [students are] grappling with complex ideas," said Heritage, who mentored Lozano and Cadenas. "Where are they? Is the idea beginning to consolidate? What do I need to do to go deeper and really help them get this?"
  • All of that may be tough to measure with quick-answer questions or exit slips. Instead, to get a full picture of student understanding, teachers need to ask open-ended questions and push students to explore ideas aloud.
  • Frey of San Diego State University tells teachers that, when listening closely to students, "The question you have to ask yourself is not whether the answer is correct or incorrect, but rather what is it likely that that student knows and doesn't know in this moment in time that would lead him to that response?" "It takes a different kind of listening," Frey said, and rather than an innate talent, it is "a habit to be developed."
  • Rather than asking multiple-choice questions or scanning quickly for right and wrong, teachers will need to be attuned to what students are saying during those discussion and debate sessions.
  • "full-scale adoption of new assessment techniques will not happen overnight. "I see this as being a three-year process, even though we only have a year before PARCC starts."
Teresa McDaniel's curator insight, March 12, 2014 10:48 AM

We are doing this in my school with our DEEPER model, but it takes time and practice to change teacher habits!

Turn Your Physical Sticky Notes Into Digital Notes - Free Technology for Teachers

Turn Your Physical Sticky Notes Into Digital Notes - Free Technology for Teachers | Common Core Middle School | Scoop.it
Post-it Plus is a free iPad app that I demonstrated for someone at the ISLMA conference yesterday. It's a great iPad app (you have to have iOS 8) that you can use to turn your physical sticky notes into digital sticky notes. With this free app installed on your iPad you can snap a picture of a collection of physical sticky notes and have them quickly digitized. Once your notes are digitized you can re-arrange them, share them with collaborators, or send them to another application like Dropbox. If you have multiple sets of notes you can combine the best notes into one board on the Post-it Plus iPad app.

Over the weekend, I spoke with my friend Grechen, who created Kodable.  She shared,

"With Kodable Sync you’ll be able to create student profiles that sync student progress on any iPad and then see how far they’ve gotten in the game. Teachers will be able to see how many times students attempted a level, how well they did, what concepts they’re mastering, etc.  "

 Published: 2/28/2008 8:59 AM

The Center on Instruction hosted a WebEx on February 20, 2008, focused on writing as a critical aspect of literacy and one in which effective instructional techniques and models for intervention are needed. Presenter Dr. Steve Graham, co-author of Writing Next: Effective Strategies to Improve Writing of Adolescents in Middle & High Schools, described the results and the implications for selecting and implementing effective instructional methods for adolescent writing, especially for students who are struggling or have learning disabilities. The PowerPoint presentation and the synopsis of the Writing Next document are available for download below. The archived WebEx is available here.
