First, an important analogy…
I’ve been potty training my daughter for what feels like months.  In February, when she started showing interest, I’d try a tactic, it would work briefly, it would stop working, and then I’d get lazy and give up.

Resources to Guide Common Core Implementation
Darren Burris's insight:

With Posterous Closing I have moved one of my "permanent" resource pages to Wordpress.  For those that find the daily curation of Scoop.it a bit overwhelming (!), this is the site where I try to sift it down to the "essentials."

Student Debate Deepens Thinking and Engagement-pulling in the speaking and listening #commoncore standards

Student Debate Deepens Thinking and Engagement-pulling in the speaking and listening #commoncore standards | Common Core Online | Scoop.it
Student debate has the capacity to both deeply engage the students in relevant learning, and to encourage students to be deep thinkers. Debate is more than simply arguing.
Paige Jaeger 's curator insight, Today, 11:12 AM

They should research in the library, before they debate to get an accurate picture.  Encourage teachers to create a reseach "task" for a debate and not just "respond" to a close reading with that as the only material for "positions."

Does everyone need Algebra 2?

Does everyone need Algebra 2? | Common Core Online | Scoop.it
Debate over the subject's relevancy brews even as the common standards expect students to master that content.
Sue Thuma's curator insight, June 17, 10:44 AM

Everyone needs to be encouraged to enroll in Algebra II.  Too many times students with ability opted out or were encouraged to take easier courses because of factors having nothing to do with academics.  I think Algebra II should be required and options given if problems arise after an honest attempt to master the subject.  I am afraid legislators are using their own bad experiences with math to make policy that doesn't move mathematics education forward.

How the h#ll can they just lie about this? I have an easy way for you to verify this data collection: Kansas agreed to longitudinal data collection for $9mill grant http://nces.ed.gov/Programs/SLDS/state.asp?stateabbr=KS

Reading Like a Historian: Contextualization

Reading Like a Historian: Contextualization | Common Core Online | Scoop.it
Teaching students to contextualize, or understand the things happening around certain historical events allows them to gain a deeper knowledge of lessons.
Dr. Dea Conrad-Curry's curator insight, June 16, 8:46 AM

The Common Core recognizes the extensive nature of the word "text." For each discipline, the word remakes an image in the disciplinarian's mind: for a musician, the text is comprised of notes on the page or the lilting tune in the air; for the artist, the text is canvas and artist; for social scientists, the text is not only the documents but the artifacts, the context and content of events and ideas.
