This is such a great visual for all grade levels to use. When students have book talks and really dig into a text, I like to eavesdrop on their conversations, interjecting to ask if they information they shared or discussed was explicit or the inferred. Students immediately look at the chart and I can also see their brains checking off the characteristics of each. This really takes something that feels abstract and makes it much more tangible and easy to quantify.
One of the big challenges for students is being able to understand what “develop” means in reference to a text. These five simple questions encourage students to consider not just the main/central ideas, but the supporting details, how the ideas evolved over time, and what messages may have been woven throughout.
COMMON CORE GAINS AN ALLY: Teach for America plans to come out in support of the Common Core today by urging the states that have adopted the standards to stick with it, despite the loud and passionate opposition. TFA co-CEOs Elisa Villanueva Beard and Matthew Kramer said they joined Team Core because they have "seen firsthand how children (and adults) rise to meet higher expectations." TFA recruits will be trained on Common Core materials in at least some regions this summer. But the group is being careful not to alienate states that haven't adopted the standards - or that are thinking of pulling out. The CEOs' statement notes that they support other standards, too, "as long as they are truly college- and career-ready."

The Common Core standards, which 45 states and Washington, D.C., have adopted, could be the cure to United States’ mediocre math scores on PISA.
At least that’s a conclusion in an assessment of the latest American scores on the international test of 15-year-olds in 65 nations, whose results were released this week. The 10-page analysiswas prepared by the Organisation of Economic Co-operation and Development; its education administrator, Andreas Schleicher is a big fan of the Common Core.
“The analysis suggests that a successful implementation of the Common Core standards would yield significant performance gains also in PISA,” concluded the report.
That’s because the standards address the key weaknesses that the 2012 assessment of just over 6,000 students in 161 randomly selected schools across America revealed.
Despite the limitations of CCSS, my reading and analysis of the standards and consortia assessments leads me to stand in support of them. Different than some, I’ve come to this way of thinking not primarily because of the myriad policy implications that exist in having a set of "national" standards, but more importantly because of the benefit this standards AND assessment framework can have on the quality of teaching and learning in Indiana’s schools.
"Arguments against the wide use of informational text with students lack an evidentiary foundation and ignore the reading demands that students will face in college and the workplace. The argument for informational texts is not that students should read more information and less literature but that they surely should read more of both (Jago, 2013). Righting the current imbalance will simply require increases in the reading of information."
