Keep in mind Patricia Kain's (Harvard) three steps for close reading:

  1. “Read with  a pencil in hand, and annotate the text.
  2. Look for patterns in the things you’ve noticed about the text—repetitions, contradictions, similarities.
  3. Ask questions about the patterns you’ve noticed—especially how and why.” (Kain, P.How to Do a Close Reading, Harvard University, 1998.

Useful, but it makes a significant error - wrong "to"/"two" in Key Ideas (Grade 7) - not good to be careless on a rubric, especially at the state level

Close Reading: Dissecting The Text

Close Reading: Dissecting The Text | Common Core - ELA | Scoop.it
A close reading of text is a rereading of a small slice of a story (or something that is short to begin with, like a poem or an essay)—perhaps rereading it many times.Then, through careful inspection of words, sentences, paragraphs, and the way they work as parts and together as a whole, the teacher leads the students to discern the author’s meaning. Students are guided to provide “textual evidence” that the author’s meaning is what it is. They can’t guess, based only their prior knowledge and a cursory look at the words on the page, what the author intends.  This means, practically, that a Cliff Note’s acquaintanceship with the text won’t cut it.

What do you think of this definition of close reading?


Close reading is when a reader independently stops at moments in a text (or media or life) to reread and observe the choices an author has made. He or shereflects on those observations to reach for new understandings that can color the way the rest of the book is read (or song heard or life lived) and thought about.


This definition needs to include 'as evidenced by'...highlighting, annotation, notetaking, writing, and discussion...
