These Action Briefs for school leaders are a starting point, designed to increase awareness of the standards, create a sense of urgency around their implementation, and provide these stakeholders — who are faced with dramatically increased expectations in the context of fewer resources — with a deeper understanding of the standards and their role in implementing the standards. Why Students Hate Reading

Why Students Hate Reading | Common Core Conversations | Scoop.it
Why Students Hate Reading
Crista Anderson's insight:

My opinions are my own...but it I appreciate hearing others articulate them so well.

Why Students Hate Reading--And Often Aren't Very Good At Ithttp://www.teachthought.com/teaching/why-students-hate-reading/ via @teachthought (Powerful read...so much truth...sad. One of the reasons I'm a proponent of most of what Common Core has to offer is based on the idea of reintroducing complex text to our students. We do have to experience and interact with what we read (and write...). Without that conversation/connection/interdependence... we are simply going through the functional motions of reading. The words and their meaning remain shallow in our interpretation. Reading is personal...nonfiction, fiction, poetry, prose... When we 'level' or 'assign' we limit students and build walls around their potential.)

5 Things We've Learned about Ed Apps & CCSS

5 Things We've Learned about Ed Apps & CCSS | Common Core Conversations | Scoop.it

March 7, 2014 As most of you know by now, we spent a great deal of time over the past several months aligning apps to the Common Core State Standards (CCSS).

"...after aligning about 400 educational apps (we only align those apps that earn a letter grades of A-C according to our review criteria) and spending many hours getting to know the standards. And here are the highlights of what we have learned:

1- The standards are a set of performance descriptions, not a curriculum.

2- The standards do require more advanced skills for grade level.

3- There are very few high quality instructional apps that align to the high school standards.

4- Sometimes there are performances in an app that aren’t designated in the standards as you would expect.

5- Having the ability to search by standard helps teachers, even if they are not required to align to CCSS.
