What is on the Obama administration’s recommended reading list for K-12? As grade levels increase, the focus of reading material shifts from literature to informational text.

Well I wondered when these people would start crawling out from under their rocks! Obama has nothing to do with the Common Core State Standards, these were developed by the states for the states. This is not a "federal" initiative. The impetus comes from business and industry's recommendations to our Council of Chief State School Officers and Governors. Delete the scoop?

Where do I start? Well let's talk about the "dummed down standards" and your suggestion that these "narrow" standards are all that is going to be taught...each state has the option of adding up to 15% of their current standards to the CCSS. In addition to that, you clearly haven't read the standards, they are far from dummed down. I bet you never moved as a child...changing standards and learning expectations from state to state. my suggestion, read the items you are carping about before sharing what is clearly faulty thinking. I actually like the IB program. But I think Common Core State Standards are going to be a huge step in the right direction for our country. Our children need to have the fundamental tools that are stressed in these standards. Does that mean we should only concentrate on literacy and math? No. We still need to be certain that our students are getting what they need from the arts and sciences. Art and Science help them with creativity and innovation. Having common standards in the areas of math and english language arts however, standards that get our students ready for work and college, I believe is essential for their success. Delete the scoop?

I understand the concern, but believe that repetitive practice is essential for learning. When you consider that learning a new language requires the user to repeat and use a a word 100 times in order to be fluent, what we are doing with math is giving students fluency in the language of mathematics. Being fluent, allows you to become creative...You wouldn't try to write a Haiku in Japanese, unless you were fully fluent in the language would you? Delete the scoop?

As we move to digital textbooks it's going to be important to watch our global counterparts to see how they handle these changes. The Common Core was based in part on what we learned from countries like Japan.

For a supposedly public initiative, the Common Core States Initiative has benefited enormously from the generosity of Bill and Melinda Gates. (Seriously, Bill and Melinda Gates are like their own mini-department of #education.
